Varejao's flopping gets everyone talking, but the rest of his defense is the real story. He's an elite defender who deserved All-Defense honors, as he can guard 4s on the perimeter or defend the post with equal effectiveness. He defends pick-and-rolls, he gets back quickly in transition, and he hustles like crazy to get loose balls. He's not a leaper, but at 6-foot-11 and 260 pounds he possesses unusual mobility for a player of his size.

Offensively, Varejao can handle the ball fairly well for his size but is a poor shooter, with a line-drive, below-the-chin, elbow-out release that will never appear in a textbook. He runs the floor well and scraps his way to a lot of second shots, plus he's great at moving without the ball, particularly as the roll man in screen-and-rolls. For him to score on his own is quite difficult, however, and opponents routinely dare him to fire away from the perimeter. Too often, he takes the bait.

Allen:

With textbook form and uncanny accuracy, Allen resides among the best shooters in the history of the league. He's deadly in catch-and-shoot situations, particularly from the corners, and fouling him is futile since he rarely misses.

Although his age is creeping up, Allen retains the ability to create shots. He's comfortable shooting off pin-downs after running his man off a screen, but he also fires quickly off the dribble -- especially going to his left. Allen handles the ball like a point guard and can initiate offense and pass better than many players at his position. While he lacks blazing speed, he can get a step on opponents because they have to guard him so closely.

Allen has put much more effort into his defense since joining the Celtics but can hardly be called an elite defender. He's a low-mistake player who doesn't foul much and competes, but he's small for a shooting guard and doesn't display outstanding lateral quickness.

Take your pick.
this was sick good post.

missed that av is very good at finishing on cuts in a variety of ways. he can creatively find reverse layups and whatnot on cuts.

Where did jumanji copy and paste that from?

Oh, and AV>Ray Allen in a vacuum but it definitely depends on fit.

It was also a sick good post when we discussed these same Hollinger write-ups seven months ago.

Defensively, James is given carte blanche by the officials to wind up and slap at the ball (or wrists or any other errant limbs) on the perimeter. This unique immunity from fouls differentiates James from every other player in the league, and has led posters on a notable poker message board to think that he is an outstanding defensive player. In the rare occasion James is whistled for the foul, he will crinkle his face until it best resembles an old woman's labia. To complete the effect, James will occasionally drip some menstrual blood onto the floor.
Hollinger is awesome.

That's like sending Al Capone away for tax evasion.

man what a crappy loss, what makes it even worse is that we should have won the game if doc had not been a complete idiot. why on earth did we go away from kg in the post when he was tooling on jamison? why on earth are we trying to exploit the ray allen/mo williams mismatch when williams switched onto him instead of exploiting the rondo/parker mismatch (lol at the thought that parker can keep rondo out of the lane).

and i love pierce but why on earth are we going at lebron who is their best defender by far in the cavs starting lineup. kg/rondo might not be as good on offense as pierce (but at worst they are damn close to him) but they have far far worse defenders guarding them who are way bigger mismatches.

anyway like i was saying in the lakers/thunder thread, there is not a huge gap like some were saying between the celtics and the cavs/magic. celtics can win this series if doc goes back to the rondo/kg mismatches that we have instead of going at our worst offensive matchup in pierce against lebron.

oh ya and i skimmed through the thread and it's like bgeclipper or whatever his name is is trying to tilt the **** out of me. the celtics played as well as they could except for 5 minutes? LOL

yea we played well in the first half (altho def not as well as we could) and played like complete garbage for pretty much the entire 2nd half. but yea we played perfect except for 5 minutes, lol gtfo

How much of going to Pierce was Doc telling them to do it or Pierce repeatedly asking for the ball and getting it because he's the leader of the team?

You also left out the part about Rondo running super hot on his jumper and at the line. Boston jumped out to their lead because Cleveland couldn't score, not because they were exposing a KG mismatch. Once Cleveland started scoring (lol Mo Williams posterizing Pierce) then the game was pretty easy. KG isn't that good on offense anymore and despite playing well, definitely isn't that big of a mismatch.

who gives a crap, it's doc's job to coach and pierce respects doc a ton

pierce isn't gonna throw a fit if doc decides to go to kg or rondo (or ray), they've done that plenty of times before

and to ur edit, yea rondo ran hot but he can still get into the lane at will vs the cavs and exploit that, kg being guarded by jamison is a big mismatch. kg is still good on offense (altho obv not near his peak) and can still abuse jamison who is not only a bad defender but is giving up a good amount of height (kg is really a 7 footer)

One of the biggest reasons Boston isn't close to Orlando/Cleveland is Doc Rivers. You can't just claim that, "well we would have won if not for Doc." Doc gets factored in to how they should be rated as a team.

Everyone has been claiming all year that Doc cost them a legit amount of wins over the course of the season and he's not going away in the next week so we shouldn't expect anything else from him.

lol Celts had a lead while Rondo was 9/10 from line and 1/1 from 3. While all the Cavs starters were like 20% from field

Then they lost it while the Cavs went back to the mean. Can't tell much from the series on this one...Can't expect LBJ to be as meh as he was again, or Jamison(who avg'd 26ppg in playoffs) to play like that. Celts had Rondo run >>>>>> expectation and ray/pierce run below.

I went to this game last night sporting my Rondo jersey. What a hostile environment, holy cow. I got booed by 50 people at the same time every time I passed a bar as I walked through downtown. As I was going up the escalator to my seat before the game 200 people in unison pointed at me over and over again chanting "Ass-hole." I got intentionally bumped into every time I walked around a corner or into the bathroom.

It was SO AWESOME. I live for that kind of stuff. For any of you out there that are like me and can smile this kind of stuff off, talk back without wanting to actually fight, and not feel threatened or embarrassed by this, I HIGHLY recommend giving this experience a try.

Going to a sporting event as an away fan is something that everyone needs to put on their bucket list in my opinion.

I went to a Yankees game in Cleveland wearing a Mariano Rivera jersey. Pretty much the same thing and yes it was awesome. I kinda felt like a dick though because it's not really cool to be that guy. I wouldn't reccomend it unless you really are an *******. You'd have to be to have fun doing this.

Worst I ever experienced was Game 6 of the ECF at Indiana during the Bulls last title run. Bulls lost the game at the end in a super close one (ended up winning in 7 obv). I wore a Rodman jersey with my friend who wore a Pippen jersey. Had **** thrown at us all the way out of the arena.

I know its to early to tell but i am worried about the celtics. They are clearly not capable of beating the cavs i think they would beat the magic but they wont beat the cavs in 7. How can we get better next year, cause they have no money to spend. Is it really gonna go down hill from here now.
