NBA Draft 2018 NBA Draft 2018

I'm surprised Doncic isn't the clear #1 by most people on here. I'll admit my research on the other guys only amounts to reading some blurbs and watching some highlight videos, but I haven't seen anything close to what it would take for a highschooler to supplant easily the best Euroleague prospect in history.

I also feel like Doncic's athleticism is being slept on a bit. Obviously that's not his main selling point, but how many other 17yo PGs could stuff a big man at the rim after a quick rotation in the world's second best league (1:50 in video)? Here's some of his more athletic-ish plays.

He's white though

doncic def in the #1 conversation, how he plays over the next year will make a difference (does he continue his upward trajectory, is he looking more athletic, has he stopped growing?). and then of course what the other guys do in college. porter has a chance to look really really sick in college and be a can't-miss star. imo ayton also has some equity to just school everyone next yr and be a skilled big prospect who has good defensive chops, gonna be hard to pass on that kind of guy for a lolwhite. to me, these top 3 guys look a good bit ahead of other prospects right now. i'd be pretty surprised if bamba sniffs the #1 conversation, he just looks way too dumb and unskilled even if he can be rudy gobert on d (no idea if he can be, his tools are arguably superior, but his feel might be a lot worse)

diallo apparently has a broken shot so i don't see him as a serious potential #1 pick with the above guys in the mix. not that it matters 11months out

more that he doesn't look to be playing ultra hard, he doesn't have to now cos he's a a jokishly overwhelming athlete at hs level, but eventually it could be a big point of difference for him imo. if he's going hard to the rim, rebounding well, and most importantly defending multiple positions, it makes him almost can't miss as a v good nba player along with his shooting

just for reference, dx has it:
1Michael PorterSF/PF
2Luka DoncicPG
3Deandre AytonC
4Mo BambaC
5Miles BridgesSF/PF
6Robert WilliamsPF/C
7Wendell CarterPF/C
8Collin SextonPG

I got Ayton as the most intriguing because I want him to turn into an all defensive type so we can call him Deandre Dayton.

I do like Bamba on the defensive side of the ball at least. Hes going to be a monster rim protector. Just lacking offense.

I'm actually liking the class after this season. Bagley is currently number 1 so have to see if he comes into this years class or stays. R.J. Barrett the number 1 prospect in 19 just changed to 2018 he could be a star one day. Going to have Bol Bol and a couple other interesting prospects as well.
Criminal to mention that group and not bring up Zion

Doncic a lock to be the best player of the bunch during his rookie season, incredibly polished and smart (+ WIM) for his age and one full year of pro basketball on top of what he's already as experience is only going to get him better

Doncic is a safe pick, meaning there's very little probability he doesn't turn into a productive starter in the NBA. After all, he's already a productive starter playing in a major league with NBA level talent. He's probably better than some chump also from the ÑBA like Ricky Rubio right now. But I'm not sure his upside is as high as people expect from a number one pick. The lack of athleticism worry seems to me possibly legit.

Michael Porter JR played an exhibition @Kansas(who is for sure a top 5 team in the nation) today.

Pretty crazy that Doncic finished Eurobasket with the most rebounds in the tournament and #4 in RPG as a guard. 6 of the top 9 in RPG are starting NBA centers.

In the annual NBA GM poll, for the question of who is the best international non-NBA player, Doncic got the highest ever percent in the 12 years the question has been asked at 69%.

He's looked good in Euroleague/ACB play so far. 21/8/7 per 36 on good efficiency through 5 games.

Career high for Doncic in EuroLeague a couple days ago. remember this is actual competitive basketball vs professionals

Games are dead they said. Everyone's solid they said. WTheActualF are the other 31% thinking?

If theres a super megasleeper in this years draft at this point, its 7'3 Matt Haarms. RS Frosh at Purdue. Apparently shoots 3's as well. Has multiple blocks in both scrimmages. Look at how well he moves for his size.

thoughts on bagley since he is officially in this draft:
  • looks like a natural 4 in today's nba. defensively seems ok? certainly has adequate lateral quickness to guard many wings, and seems to be a solid shotblocker and good rebounder
  • this opinion deviates from consensus a bit so it might change after i see more - but imo he's a good athlete and very long, but not a quick twitch guy. athletically he reminds me a bit of say otto porter or brandon ingram (albeit bigger, more fluid, and more coordinated than those guys)
  • seems to play out of the post a lot, and does a lot of damage on the inside in most of his highlights. imo that isn't going to work in the nba, he's not really big or explosive enough
  • shooting numbers aren't great, but tbh i'd expect him to be able to turn into a solid shooter over time. his form looks basically fine. this is pretty important for him obviously
  • seems to be a merely ok passer atm, not terrible but not a big strength. really would help him to develop this a lot imo
  • overall doesn't really strike me as having megastar upside (due to lack of explosive athleticism / polished skill level), and the uncertainty of exactly what his best nab role is. but he seems likely to become a good starter. i think the main appeal with him lies with the fact that's he's basically has a pretty strong foundation at everything. the path to goodness for him seems to be as a strong do it all kind of guy who can also score a bit. imo he seems like a guy that nba teams should be hoping is coachable, because i could see him turning out meh if he just develops kinda randomly

ayton looked good in this game:

Ayton looks awesome

Kinda crazy that there have been drafts where guys like Cody Zeller have gone #4 overall and this draft one of Michael Porter Jr, Ayton, or Bagley could go #4.

he does, and it's worth pointing out that e mexico's tallest player is 6'8. but given that, there's impressive stuff he does like a couple of quick read passes he made (instincts in general seem good), as well as the fact that he just looks huge. def looks to have continued to put on muscle which is a good sign for his work ethic, and he's already 7'1 260 w 7'5 spa apparently

he seems like a really good dude too, very friendly in interviews and doesn't shut up about working hard staying humble blah blah blah. nba teams probably love that stuff

mo bamba comes across as a very bright guy (book smarts), one of the better nba prospects i've seen anyway. i could see nba teams liking the narrative of a smart guy with his athletic profile. that said, his instincts seem weak on the court and he's kinda unskilled in general. historically it seems like high iq in the conventional sense doesn't necessarily seem to correlate that well with bbiq? at the very least there's lots of counterexamples

the other weird thing about him seemingly being a NERD is that one of his brothers is in prison, and his other brother tried to expose him for accepting money/whatever to go to texas, because mo didn't want him to be his agent (guy seems like a dumbass so yeah ldo he doesn't want you as his agent). so lol at his family situation tbh

anyway, as a member of the bourgeois intelligentsia i'm rooting for him to succeed

You'dnever imagine a highlight video of a guy who went for 25 and 10 could look so bad. Bagley gets blown by defensively 3 times. He takes a number of dumb/wild shots/moves. Gets most of his scoring by exploiting smaller college guys that doesnt seem like it will be transferrable.

He did have a sweet eurostep around the 5:10 mark though.

Looks like a pretty good video imo of an 18 y/o first game.

1. Sophistication in the post
2. Ball-handling looks good
3. Moves well for size
4. Shot looks good/smooth, just shot poorly
5. High-points rebounds on both ends.

There was some sloppy passes and lazy close outs but not sure how up he was for Elon. Skill set seems way more transferable than Jokafor’s when Danny was washing his lethargic balls.

Still unclear whether he will be better than Donovan Mitchell.

He is very athletic and does have good movement. His shot looks kinda broken though. Seemed like a majority of his scoring there came from just having size on smaller guys not that he can help that or shouldnt exploit just seems I dunno...I was expecting more when I saw the stat line since I know he can do alot I guess.

I’d be surprised if he doesn’t start shooting 50/35/75 on decent 3/ft volume.

Yeah maybe but he shot 29% from 3 and 67% FT in High School last year.
