i agree his shot looks a bit unusual at first but it's quick release and it goes in - and when you look at his form there's not much to criticise, like his elbow is in, no hitch etc. it's hard to project him as anything other than a very good shooter at this point, he shot 40% from 3 in highschool and is currently 40%+ from 3 and 80% fts

i don't think it's ******ed to look at him in the same breath as the top few guys atm. he arguably has more fixable weakeness than anyone as a prospect and is also seemingly really good at the things he does well which already set him up well to be a v useful player. plus he's super young and shows little flashes of being able to drive off the catch etc

just crazy how good this draft looks atm that he's potentially going to be there at 6 for someone

Doncic / Ayton / JJJ / Trae / Bagley / MPjr / Bamba

Thats 7 legitimate first overall choices in most draft years or at the very least slam dunk top 3 choices in most years.

Then this years back end lottery guys like Mikal Bridges, Wendell Carter, Sexton, Knox, and Miles Bridges seem much better than most drafts back end lottery prospects have been too.

dont get me wrong, id be thinking about taking JJJ 1st overall at this point.

that stroke just looks a lot like joakim noah.

I worry about JJJs ceiling. I think the other top guys have higher ceilings. I think his floor is pretty high as a stretch 5 that can block shots, but Im not sure about the other stuff.

edit: I still might have him third, but no way he passes Ayton or Doncic for me

New mock draft by Givony on ESPN

1. Phoenix - Doncic
2. Atlanta - Ayton
3. Sacramento - Bamba
4. Cleveland - Jaren Jackson JR
5. Orlando- Bagley
6. Chicago - Michael Porter JR
7. Memphis - Trae
8. Dallas - Wendell Carter

I kind of think Wendell Carter is a better prospect than Bagley at this point. Think he may end up gettingdrafted before Bagley.

Thought Givonys description of JJJs fit in the NBA and Cleveland was good

"At 6-foot-11 and 242 pounds, with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, it's very likely that Jackson will see significant minutes at center in the NBA as his promising frame fills out, rather than at the 4, as he mostly does in college at the moment. Jackson's ability to space the floor (44 percent from 3; 79 percent from the line), block shots (5.9 per 40 minutes), switch on every screen and, increasingly, put the ball on the floor from the perimeter make him an ideal fit for the modern NBA.

He has significant upside to grow into as well, as he's the youngest player currently projected to be drafted. Jackson is the exact type of player the Cavs sorely need on their roster right now, but he'd be a terrific building block to have regardless of what LeBron James decides to do."

hot take: trae young doesnt fall past the kings. vivek so badly wants the next steph. he fooled himself into stauskas and buddy by the same logic.

I’ll lay 2:1 Trae is selected and retained (i.e., no draft day trade) by not the Kings.

trae young starting to nosedive, his 3P% has regressed to 37% and he's 0-6 tonight. oklahoma about to get blown out by baylor and may not get into the tourney.

I was all aboard the Trae train, but now I'm thinking he is now merely a top 7 pick and definitely not top 2 like I thought before.

He will still be able to pass and shoot really well in the pros, but his ability to run an offense at a high level has become quite a bit less likely.

Players with ridiculously high 3P% in college on small/medium samples are always the prime candidates to get overrated. color me shocked

The Trae Young hype train has now crashed. It was a fun ride though!

i decided to run a sportsreference query:

- freshman or sophomore individual season
- 3pFGA/game > 8
- 3p% > 36
- played 29 or more games in a season
- since 2005
- sorted by win shares

the sample is basically steph, trae, tyler hall (midmajor prospect) and a bunch of people i've never heard of from smaller schools

so even though the hype train has crashed just in terms of his 3p% no longer being nuclear i still think trae is a pretty special case since nobody is doing what he's doing on a major
program level.

edit - also, sort by assists. nobody is even close. steph avg'd 3 assists per game, lol. nobody has even half the assists/game trae does.

some interesting anecdotal stuff from one of these guys i had never heard of

tyler harvey, shoots 43% from 3 on 8 3PA/gm in his soph season and 43% from 3 on 9 3PA/gm in his junior season. his conference was big sky. he ends up getting selected 51st by the magic and now he's playing in france

If Bagley really has a 7' wingspan, there's just no way I'd take him in the Top 3 and probably not Top 5

I'm just going by my gut, but I'm still on the Trae Train. I still believe he'll be a very very good NBA player, with the most potential to be the next Steph than anyone else I've seen. (Obv it's unlikely overall, but I don't know who else has greater potential.)

Bagley seems like Randle a bit.

Randle has become a good player but not sure Bagley’s worth a pick over Mikal or Wendell at this point.

I like Bagley > Miles

Trae Young is going to put up some great numbers in the league when he gets away from the college game and its cramped spacing and the gimmicky defenses that see teams face guard him off the ball from halfcourt on.

He has gotta be up there as one of the favorites for Rookie of the year next season, regardless of team that drafts him.
