NBA Draft 2018 NBA Draft 2018

04-11-2018 , 10:01 AM

6'11 with a 7'4 wingspan. Moves really well.

Over 8 blocks per 100 possessions

On offense
60% from 2
40% from 3 (over 2.5 attenpts per game)
80% FT
True Shooting .647

Quite possibly the best american defensive prospect since Anthony Davis. Offensive upside is Giannis with a jump shot. If you compare their numbers, he is basically a more advanced offensive prospect than KAT was and a superior defensive prospect as well. Dont really see how you can take anyone over him at #1.

Doesn’t it hurt that jjj played a ton less minutes than many of his top of the lottery peers? I don’t think it was his fault, I’d blame izzo, but it likely heavily increases his rate stats.

if there is a prayer he gets drafted round 1, he should declare though.
grayson allen couldve been a lotto pick if he left after year 1 or 2

They won't be dogging his talent when he's playing in the MECCA.

interesting bagley v ayton offensive upside article:
https://www.thestepien.com/2018/04/1...marvin-bagley/

cliffs: guy thinks ayton is a bit stiff, while bagley shows all sorts of awesome fluidity/ballhandling for his size. he views bagley as having more offensive upside

Mo Bambas the rare top 10 prospect who should go to thr combine. If he plays well in the 5 on 5 portion, he elevates to top 5 pick.

Wait, so this means the Big East 2x defender of the year is actually trash at defense or am I reading it wrong?

that's what it saying but wouldn't be surprised if;
- the numbers are compromised in some way
- this metric sucks (it's a plusminus stat with boxscore and luck adjustments so plenty of ways for it to be wrong)
- ncaa slaps are terrible at awarding defensive awards (i mean guy is 6'3 so...)

spicy from dean

doncic shooting 30% from 3 is pretty annoying for the hype train, and it's truly an ok reason to discount him, but i think it's likely not reflective of his nba potential as a shooter. i think this because;
  • very good shooter otherwise (ft%), and this is a career low % for him
  • he takes a lot of hard ones (and looks comfortable doing so)
  • his form looks good, and is versatile enough get lots of shots up
  • he kinda sucked 2nd half of the year and seemed banged up generally
  • he seems good enough at everything else that 3pt mediocrity may not prevent him from being great offensively

that said doncic is generally not looking like quite the megaelite prospect he was earlier in the year and is possibly more of a 'normal' #1 type prospect

i think dean is too low on mikal bridges - i think his points would be totally true if he was merely a 'good' shooter. but it really seems he's a solid chance to be a legit elite one. when danny green / covington are shooting 40% from 3 at volume they are legitimately some of the best additions to a team you can make in terms of value added for an off-ball player

Thanks for posting this.

Dean GOAT NBA Draft 2018.

I'm also very high on JJJ but I think I would take Doncic #1, so I have him at #2.

stepien is good imo, but i do get the sense that the weights the end up assigning to their observations seems to conveniently result in the same overall ranks you'd get by skewing heavily towards certain types of stats

i think this is why they are such ayton haters (not all of them but seem more in this camp than 'consensus'). fine position to have overall i guess if you trust the stats

One of them on twitter keeps pointing to Gobert and Embiids struggles in the playoffs as evidence you cant build around bigs. I think they feel Ayton will always be exploited on the defensive end vs good teams and its caps his ceiling.

certainly a valid point imo, especially since ayton's defensive instincts seem way below goberts/embiids

a potential positive spin on it is that he seems to be a better mover in open space than either of those guys and has shown some ok chops when switched onto small guys. most of the knocks on his d seem to be due to his inexplicably unimpactful rim protection

realistically he will never be able to guard the top top perimeter threats you see in the later playoff rounds though, so their overall point is still likely correct. what makes jjj soooooo sexy is that he seems totally capable of being that guy; a switchable, smart, rim protecting defensive beast that can actually do real damage on the elite offensive guys like dray green, all while being a reasonable contributor offensively
