Boston (44-11)
Cleveland (40-11)
seem locked for the 1st and 2nd seed.
Question #1 is: Who finishes with the better record?
Cleveland finishes with the better record. I might feel even stronger about this after the trade deadline if/when they pick somebody up. I think they do a better job of beating crappy teams, and while Boston might be the stronger title contender, Cleveland should edge them out in wins. Home court in the playoffs is going to be as important as I can ever remember.
Atlanta (31-21), Miami (28-24) and Philadelphia (27-24) aren't really what I consider playoff teams (the so-called gamut test of "what is a playoff team and what is not") but it would be fairly difficult with them to miss the playoffs. So, Question #2 is: Who makes it to the 2nd round?
Gotta go with Miami here. When it's all said and done, they have the best player of these three teams, by far. It sounds like something cliche and dumb that Tony Kornheiser would say, but Wade is really a difference maker in separating Miami from this mediocre pack. Jermaine O'Neal wasn't a slam-dunk acquisition but he'll help, and we've all seen what Wade can do in the playoffs.
Detroit (27-24) is firmly in the playoff hunt, needing 5 losses to bounce out. Hollinger feels they're still a solid playoff team (at ~63%). We've all been joking about this since the AI trade, Question #4 is: Does Detroit make the playoffs?
Unfortunately I think they do. They've ran pretty good to be three games over .500 at the break, as I think they're a losing team. They have a -PD and when they lose, they often look awful. The Stuckey-Rip-Iverson trio doesn't really make sense together. With Billups starting and Stuckey as the sixth man, they would have been a lock for the 4 seed. I think they'll hold on to the 7th seed, but it wont be pretty.
The Wizards (11-42) are locked into the last spot in the East. No team is nearly as bad as them. So this is a 2 parter of sorts... Milwaukee (26-29), New Jersey (24-29), Chicago (23-30), New York (21-31), Charlotte (21-31), Indiana (21-33) and Toronto (21-34) are all lumped together. Solidly below-average teams but not woeful. Rather then ranking all of them, which would be time-consuming and mildly entertaining at best, Question #5 (and last one) is: Which team squeezes into the last spot to play the role of 07-08 Hawks, and which team finishes next to the Wizards in ping-pong balls?
I'm not going to go the normal homer route and take the Knicks. As much as I love them, they aren't the best team in this group right now. They are however the most dangerous team in the playoffs with their dynamic offense. The trade deadline might make it a clear case for Chicago if they pick up Bosh or Amare. I've been riding the Charlotte 8th Spot train for about two months now so I'm gonna ride or die with that. They were at their best with Augustin getting a lot of minutes and how he's back. They are far and away the best defensive team in this group and their offense can pick it up. I'll take Toronto to finish last in this group even though they should be a playoff team. For some reason they just suck.
So tough to be predicitng the bottom 3-4 seeds in each conference - trades and injuries play are the two biggest factors and can't be predicted. Unless it's Houston, you know Yao's going down.
nah, if fat ass Lee from the Isiah years can do it, so can Brad. He's actually pretty money in the D'Antoni system, given his penchant for passing and the pick n pop game.

Yeah I guess if Kurt Thomas was fast enough Brad would do just fine.
i don't think Kerr is getting enough hate. Granted, Porter sucked and seemed totally out of his element. But by having Gentry take over and go back to a 7SOL style it illustrates how poor Kerr's decisions were in the first place. If you're going to play 7SOL, which is better:
Nash
Amare
Marion
Bell
Hill
Diaw
Barbosa
or
Nash
Amare
Shaq
Hill
J-Rich
Barbosa
hmm.. maybe it ain't so bad. Amare did tear it up last season in the run-n-gun with Shaq along side him. But that was with Shaq deferring and now he gets a lot more touches.
Michael: Yeah, Ryan snapped at me, but there was this twinkle in his eye that I picked up on, which said, "Dude, we're friends. I'm doing this for appearances. I am the big boss now. And I have to seem like an ogre. But you know me and you trust me. And we like each other. And we'll always be friends. And I would never take you for granted in a million years. And I miss you, man. And I love you." His words.
I guess on the plus side of the trade this means that the Hornets get better for right now since Tyson wasn't even playing. This should bury Sean Marks and Ryan Bowen wayyyyyyyy down the bench and maybe CP can make Smith/Wilcox a bit better while providing a bit more depth now.
