again, if it was easy to do what Nirvana did more bands would do it. writing good pop-punk-grunge songs isn't easy. writing popular music at all isn't easy. you can probably count on one hand the number of people who can write these kind of songs in their sleep, but choose not to for reasons of musical integrity.

i'm not trying to completely discount the guy or his band, i like them a lot (despite never really listening to them anymore). in fact, i'm quite partial to heavy/distorted music that sound sorta messy but underneath lies some subtle, simple melody (say, like karp (not in anyway getting drafted obv)). but he's not particularly original or anything.
But Cobain was a ****ing genius pop songwriter in a way many of those other bands were not.

Yeah I like my MJ pick because he can work with allllll kinds of genre. I'll have to draft one of these tween heartthrobs with my last pick for the lulz. Err but anyways I feel like I can just take anybody good and they could contribute with MJ well. Rock, R&B, rap, anything.

i think you could count a lot of bands that do and just never got lucky. high variance biz.

and let's not kid ourselves and pretend like death wasn't a big part of sealing Nirvana's legacy. we're always remembered more fondly in death.

yeah Kobain's death was huge and largely why their legacy is so big. They were the biggest of all the alt rock bands from the 90's though, and thats with missing the entire second half of the decade!

death did not set cobain apart from the other songwriters of his era and genre. he had already blown them out of the water and created a huge celebrity.

death may have elevated him way higher on the all time list given ppl are arguing he was properly drafted here.

I don't think if random popular grunge singer suicided, overdosed, or w/e, would have Cobain's legacy in the same instance. It might 'bump' their career in hindsight a bit but think Nirvana's music speaks for itself. Was hugely popular before he blew his head off.

they did have two #1 albums before he died, so...

(with one of the others being a $500 indie release, and the other being a compilation basically, then the post-death Unplugged album was #1 as well?)

The main thing his death did was end it before he potentially could sell out/become lame/whatever. I don't think it changed how any of their actual work is perceived though. It just kind of adds to the aura.

He killed himself too soon was peaking. Should have made 2 more albums. Then suicide.

In Utero has like 6 of their top 10 songs on it

Although this is my favorite I think

disagree. not sure a song on IU cracks my top 5.

sweating draft hard, looks awesome. Only comment I'm going to make is I think Page is probably too high but plenty of picks in this thing can be justified if you make a sweet production out of it.

Just went through Nirvana's studio albums to try to pick out my favorite tracks and can't. They're so ****ing good.

Their live album absolutely crushes as well.

I probably said the above because I was listening to In Utero in lieu of the pick for the first time in a while and it was always my favorite, still rules.

unplugged is great, mainly for the non-Nirvana songs they perform.

i might revise my no in utero song cracks the top 5. it'd been a long time since listening to it. for one thing, it's their best sounding album by far production-wise. just listening through it real quick, i'd guess serve the servants, very ape, and all apologies would have to be considered. Frances Farmer too prob.

about a girl, on a plain, drain you, territorial pissings, the 3 just mentioned, love buzz, and I loved the song they had on the No Alternative comp, Sappy. Possibly my favorite nirvana song.

They have a lot of awesome unreleased (?) stuff. Curmudgeon is my favorite of those.

There is a huge UNDRAFTED been slept on here, who I personally would have had in the top 3 if we're creating a studio. Pure all round genius too. If anyone wants to know who shoot a pm

In terms of a studio figure-head think McCartney is pretty awesome if you are planning on having a fluid studio where it's feasible that all artists could work together. His collaboration experience and production experience cannot be under-rated. Same goes for MJ and to a lesser extent Lennon, Elvis, and Dylan imo.

Jay-Z seems like super clear pick if building a rap studio. I mean he basically brings enough commercial appeal straight off the bat, that you could now pick without any commercial concerns and still sell enough to ensure success. Guy's an empire.

Spoiler:
Round 1 - Pick 11

Justin Timberlake

Pure value wise, Timberlake is probably still a slight reach at this point, but he is the perfect fit for my studio's eventual overall plan. Part of that plan is to become a pop music machine. While there are some picks that would be better here from a pure pop standpoint, Timberlake is one of the biggest names around in pop music. His last album Future Sex/Love Sounds set the record on Itunes for most preorders and for most digital copies sold in 1 week. It had 3 #1 singles, the album debuted at #1 and Timberlake won two grammys for it.

Some of the other reasons I am drafting him this early will make themselves clear as my future picks are made (no I'm not trying to create a boy band, so you can at least put that thought out of your head).

Timberlake's personality and abilities make him the perfect person to be the face of our label. He is a goofball who will not only get his face out there with his music but with his acting abilities. He is an accomplished singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, essentially a jack of all trades, and will make himself very valuable not only on his own music but as a collaborative artist.

Welp, I guess the vixticator from the Hollywood draft is going to make his presence felt in this thread. Can't you just discuss things without making ******ed and super hyperbolic statements like this? Maybe In Utero was their best album but to call it >>>>Nevermind is ridiculous. Then again, didn't you have I, Robot as like an all-time great movie or something?

Wow if I had gotten MJ I thought I might have been safe on waiting until the 3rd round to pick up JT.

Also people are talking about a certain undrafted who hasn't gone and I'm pretty shocked too as he or she probably would have been in my top 5.
