I think that Wilson >>>>>>> Cobain.

I really feel like Cobain gets way overrated just because of the way his life played out. We never got to see Nirvana's decline, so we always think of their material as being at the insanely high level of Nevermind, where we criticize other artists who we got to see their decline.

Cobain was a unique individual and a good songwriter/singer, Wilson was a once in a generation talent imo.

Wilson had many more peers of his time who were highly regarded than Cobain did, imo. In fact, three of them went in the top five in this draft!

I think writing a song that makes McCartney cry whenever he hears it puts Wilson several rungs above Cobain.

I won't defend Cobain against guys like Wilson, Hendrix, etc. It's true that they're legendary talents and great pieces to start a studio with. I just generally veer towards more alternative/rock based music so Cobain was the guy I really wanted to build around, plus he's iconic in his own right.

I do think this draft has sort of an anti-recency bias going on. We're still not far removed enough from Cobain's career to really see the impact he had the way we can with the Beatles, Wilson, etc. But he's basically been the most influential figure in rock for the past 20 years.

yeah Cobain is a good pick because it allows you to go in a pretty specific way that i think is cool (and appeals to my tastes personally). i sorta wanted to go that way to begin with, not sure if i'll continue anyway or try something different because i have someone else now.

also FU GEDDY!!! hurry up and pick, brah.

hypothetical music draft >>> real life

get your priorities straight!

My gripe with Cobain isn't that we haven't seen his influence. My gripe is that there were plenty of other similar talents who were doing the same things he was doing, but he just so happened to catch on and become the huge star. With guys like Elvis/Wilson/Lennon/Hendrix/etc. they were doing things that nobody had ever thought of before.

To be fair, both Elvis and Lennon started their careers by doing things no white people were doing before.

I dunno man, Nirvana and Cobain are pretty often cited as an influence by most alt rock bands from the past 15 years or so, way more so than the bands that influenced Nirvana/Cobain get mentioned.

yeah, well, i guess he was at a distinct disadvantage by being born in 1967. kinda tough to re-invent the wheel...

i think some people are holding him to a pretty high standard. he popularized a new genre (and pretty directly influenced the direction of rock music for the next 10-20 years), blowing the pop stuff and the 80's hair crap out of the water. the hair band genre like ceased to exist after dominating rock music for 5-10 years.
