God I want to trade up to pick right now, but I really doubt anyone's looking to trade their first rounder

Disagree. Wilkins is overrated due to his "flash" imo. Vince Carter is a great comparison.

STOP MENTIONING PLAYERS PLEASE.

This has been discussed, I listened to both arguments, and I made a decision. The decision was to not allow mentioning of players either specifically or by describing them.

I agree w/ Assani.. Although 'nique was the better defender between the 2.

edit: I'm not sure he was, but I base this off the fact VC is horrible at defense.

I like the Zo pick, not so much with Nique for aforementioned reasons. I probably underrated Zo's injury problems a bit, but always felt he was the best defender in the NBA for much of his career, better than *** *** but only slightly.

Just make sure Zo plays in Phoenix, and he'll be fine.

I'm not really...its just that we don't really have much else to go by other than watching them and forming our own opinions.

You just mentioned Vince Carter though. Why would Yao Ming in that context be any different?

oops

Bobbo, in regards to people being afraid to drive at Zo, that's basically how I feel about KG. It's hard to quantify FGs-not-attempted, though.

Yeah, I understand this and agree. But again, doesn't that same phenomenon also apply to Yao?

Further, Yao's teams have historically been atop the league leaders in defensive efficiency; I'd have to do some digging (im not prepared to do) but I don't recall those hornets teams being defensive juggernauts. (I could be wrong here, I didn't ever watch the charlotte hornets!) So, to say Zo is "def" better at defense is misleading; I would chalk them to being pretty similar. Both can anchor a d, that is for sure. Offensively though, Yao is "def" better, which overall, makes him the better player.

just look at the season comparison here:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/...rnal01&y2=1998

Where are you getting it that they are similar offensively? I don't see it. Using words as poetry is interesting, when you say things like and scorers would specifically not drive to the bucket if he is in there. (about Zo's defense) but why is this not the case with Yao? Keep in mind he was about half a foot taller then Zo! So shouldnt this be even more the case??

intimidation is a huge factor in basketball. Yao is slow and can barely move around the paint, so other players besides the man that yao is assigned to can pretty much avoid him easily. ALthough one on one he might be equal to zo defensively, he has nowhere near the mobility to defend the whole paint the way zo did. Also mentioned was the fact zo can defend pick an rolls as well.

its like in football, your not gonna throw to your WR that is covered by deion, your not gonna drive to the bucket to confront alonzo.

There is just so many options a coach can have on defense with a guy like zo, and as a coach your super limited with yao out there. What kind of traps and help side defenses can you setup with yao out there who moves like a snail opposes to zo who can cover most guards as long as they were below the top circle.

Its true in the nba, getting past 7 2 is a bad thing. Your height now becomes a liability because it slows you down so badly, especially latterally where you have to defend pick an rolls and such.

Yao has been posterized so many times.

here's something to consider-- the average player can't do this but most of the players being drafted here can posterize anyone from time to time.

Basketballreference.com is so awesome. I could look at that site all day.

I'm going through it right now and finding late round sleepers. Fun!

I love Zo, but this is probably too high. That said, if you want a solid big guy with 41 teams, you need to stretch a bit at some point. Can't always just go with 'best player available.' I'd rather have him than most centers because he was a very solid defender of the paint. Early in his career, he had a great first step to the basket after facing up on other centers. Useful enough from the foul line.

Other 'elite' centers from his era have been picked, Shaq, Ewing, Robinson, Hakeem. You can debate it, but he's not going to be there at pick 50+.

In recent history, which center would you say did the best possible with the supporting cast that they had? A couple had all-stars beside them regularly during their title runs (Shaq, Duncan). Just a curious question. Also, Zo for HOF - in or out?

uh no, I actually said if Yao was SHORTER he would block more shots not taller.

I was just making the point that once u go over 7 feet it's usually bad and people are like omg Yao is 7'5-7'6 he should be dominating, when in reality he is at a much bigger disadvantage than almost all 7 footers are.

Manute says hi

The best play is the 4 consecutive blocks. Mugsy's reaction is the best, he's torn between celebrating and trying for the rebound.
