I just got home from work, I haven't even really looked at who I would pick. Give me a few minutes--I will have something up soon.

anti-Semite might be a bit harsh. I try not to toss such inflammatory terms around. I'm sure some of us have drafted much bigger scum bags.

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion - Let's Get'er Done

i'll take clark kellogg, and try to justify it later. moving into my apt during the next couple days

"Kellogg started for three years at Ohio State. He was named the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player for his junior year, the 1981-82 season. Several weeks later, the Pacers selected Kellogg with the eighth pick in the NBA draft.

During his first three seasons with the Pacers, Kellogg was one of the NBA's premier power forwards. He played in 237 of a possible 246 games and averaged 19.3 points and 9.7 rebounds. Kellogg could score with his strong inside play, by driving to the basket or with his jump shot.

Early in the 1985-86 season, though, Kellogg sustained a major injury to his left knee. He played 19 games that season, then retired after playing four games the following season."

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion - Let's Get'er Done

Clark Kellogg was a guy I was thinking about since like round 5 and almost pulled the trigger two rounds ago until I discovered that he first injured his knee in 1984, when he was 23. By the time he was 24, the press was referring to it as a "chronic" knee injury. When you look at his stats year-by-year, it looks like this was a one-time freak injury that happened after he turned 24 that cost him his career. But sadly, it wasn't.

Here's some quotes:

From an October 2, 1984 NYT article:

"Clark Kellogg , the Indiana Pacer forward, underwent knee surgery but, the Pacers said, should be ready to play by the season opener Oct. 27"

From a November 28, 1985 article:

"Clark Kellogg of the Pacers, a starting forward was sidelined with a recurring injury to his left knee"

From an September 16, 1986 article:

"Clark Kellogg remains questionable because of a recurring knee ailment that limited him to only 19 games last year."

From his NBA.com bio:

"Chronic knee problems forced him to retire"

Wiki:

He played three full seasons, and portions of two others, for the Pacers before chronic knee problems and the emergence of eventual rookie-of-the-year Chuck Person forced him to retire.

But hey, at this point, why not take a chance - but I wanted to take him and make Assani's Penny Hardaway argument and say he was going to be a 20/10 guy for 5-10 years.

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion - Let's Get'er Done

Hey, why not 4 posts in a row.

Considering how well known Clark Kellogg is and how awesome he was, finding information on exactly why his career ended is nearly impossible. I know it was a knee injury, but I dont know if it was a fracture, or a ligament tear, or some condition, or what. That article that KLJ linked to is one of the only things that I found as well, and its from a website that is not about basketball, but God.

If anyone finds anything else, pls let us know, b/c I think Kellogg is an interesting player to talk about.

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion - Let's Get'er Done

Ooh, just found this, an interview that must have just taken place since Billy Packer got canned:

MT: Then the knee problems began to happen?

CK: Yep after my second year. My first year I played pretty much every game and produced at a high level. I was on a poor team. We just didn’t have enough talent to compete consistently at that time. We were one of the worst teams in the league record wise. I showed that I was a player that could be really good over the course of time.

The second year I had a little bout with some knee trouble. My third year I had my first knee surgery. I still came back and played I 77-78 games I think my third year.

Then going into my fourth year I was on my way man. I had a terrific camp. I was really playing well. As a young veteran–if you will–I knew how to get ready for the season. I was ready to take that next step. Early in that season, I had to have another knee operation. Michael, that was really the beginning of the end. I never got back to being able to play consistently after that. That was the winter of ‘85.

yeah, i'm not going to try at all to pass this one off as 'freak' in the least. its inevitable, and early. if i can get a few seasons out of him, maybe i win a championship. if not, **** it, it's the 9th round.
