Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion

I understand if people don't want to do it because of my post count, but I've been around for 3 and a half years, have read every post in the thread, and have recently started posting regularly ( lurked mostly before that

Also, I think I have a different view on basketball than most do due to being a big Berri fan which could lead to a more interesting debate.

Me and KC like Berri (a little at least). I actually had a spreadsheet that calculated WP48 for everyone in this draft...

I think the only qualifications are be active, pick quickly and i guess read the thread. We just need people who don't disappear for weeks at a time.

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion

Actually I lost the spreadsheet, and it wasn't all that great anyway. Berri separates by position (mostly because big men get more rebounds and tend to be more efficient) but it's sometimes hard to separate between SFs/PFs. Also, I used pre-24 seasons.

I can make another on though. It'll just take a while. Also, I'll just use players who have been taken already. I'll include PER too.

Berri is an economist who used to work at cal state fullerton and now works at colorado state (I think that's right, but don't feel like looking it up on his blog) that wrote wages of wins and maintains the blog http://dberri.wordpress.com/

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion

things I like about berri: highly values efficiency, doesn't use usage as a valid excuse for lower efficiency

things I dislike: overvalues individual rebounding, turning guys like Marcus Camby into top win contributors which I just don't buy.

Wages of win is an OK metric, but has it's flaws. It's good to look at WOW as a tool, tho. Spits out some interesting stuff.

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion

I think if you look at a bunch of different box score metrics at once you start to get a pretty good picture of it all.

WOW works because I think it does a good job of capturing who good defenders are (by giving defensive rebounding a lot of weight) but at the same time that kind of hurts it (by overvaluing a guy like Jason Kidd)

PER's probably a better offensive metric, but I think it overvalues chuckers a little bit.

There are others, but they're reall more of the same. I guess if you look at them all, and put them all on the same scale, you could probably just average them and have a decent metric.

Re: Modern Era NBA Build a Franchise Draft Discussion

JoA, to be fair it's hard to say that it overvalues someone like jason kidd until we have a season to see if his prediction is right.

As a side note, I think PER hugely overvalues chuckers and think that it's a harmful stat in that it looks like it's better than traditional stats but really isn't by that much.

This... I think that anyone who ranks highly(or poorly) in one metric alone can be dismissed, but if you're sitting at or near the top of all of them (Duncan, KG), than you must be pretty freaking good.

And Camby is waay waay overrated by Wow. I love the guy, but he's a pretty bad basketball player overall. Offensively he's less than zero, and defensively he's very Raja-like in his overrated-ness.

I think this may be one of the most important sentences in this thread.
