Round 6 Pick 230

CHUCK "The Rifleman" PERSON

Chucky! Standing at 6'8" and 220 pounds - though hes no Kevin McHale, Person was also a big muthrfukr with a pansy azz game. He didnt do much on the court aside from reign threes from all over the court with an assasin-like-precision...making him one of the few to actually live upto his nickname...."The Rifleman!" via his marksmanship. Looking at my roster so far - I am in dire need of a solid 3 point threat - and who better to pick up than one of the pioneers of the 3 point shot himself.

I couldve gone with a more efficient 3pt shooter - but I really like what Chuck brings to the table. I can put him in at the 2 or the 3 subbing RIP or Terry Cummings off...and I feel very confident with giving him the ball at the end of a game. He brings leadership and walks with a swagger that says "yea - I fukd your mom - what are you gonna do about it?"...Hes a savvy scorer who can log major minutes if need be. He fits in very well within my team concept and adds a much needed shooter to the lineup and picking him up with the 230th overal pick is pretty good value imo.

My Team So Far:

PG Chris Paul
SG Richard Hamilton
SF Terry Cummings
PF Vin Baker
C Theo Ratliff

Bench:
SG Chuck Person

toney was more of a pure 2 than ainge iirc. he passed well and could handle the ball, but he was a shooter/scorer first and always. mainly just because mo was so solid and a shooter is what that system called for.

he was sick. too bad abt the injuries as he may have been a superstar. on that team filled with name players, he was nearly every sixer fans favorite.

the boston strangler is top 10 alll time nicknames.

in barkleys book he said:

"Toney was amazingly strong, he and Moses were the only ones on the team that could post me up!" Barkley went on to say in the book, "I thought he (Toney) was the best player on the team when I got here. We had Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, and Julius Erving but the only one I was in awe of was Andrew."

Shooting Guard slash Small Forward...I dont think it really makes a difference to be honest...the reason I typed in "SG" instead of "SF" was because I see him subbing in for RIP (my SG) more often than for Terry (my SF)

tbh i think you might have problems slotting him at the SG defensively, he never played it over the course of his career (hes much more of a SF/PF than SG/SF, but likely just plain SF)

the rifleman" was also really durable (its not like he ever did much that would endanger his body )

Lee is a good guy to have, nice pick.

Could have gone in a lot of directions, but ultimately wanted a defensive minded 2-guard so I could play Ricky in the 6th man instant offense role.

I almost hate doing this because the guy is a box, but I'm taking John Starks. write up will be up in a few minutes.
I didn't like Starks either, and a chucker, but seems to fit in with that team.

Don't remember him, but his numbers look fairly good although a pretty short career.

Theres a guy out there who I don't want to take because he doesn't fit with my team, but I just might have to due to him being imo far and away BPA. But I really doubt the #1 guy I want will go, so its probably a moot issue anyway.

There are a couple of really good scorers left who would make good 6th men.

assuming you mean wing scorers, i think the modern wing 6th man is a result of not being enough scoring bigs (and an abundance of scoring smalls), rather than because it's necessarily a great strategy. i do agree that there are a lot of guys that would fill the traditional 6th man role though

and assani, i'm pretty sure i know who you're talking about, and i agree

LOVE LOVE LOVE Toney - Just a straight baller. I think he should have gone a while ago, since a lot of ppl dont mind taking injured guys. Stress fractures in his feet basically cut short his career. I think he would make an awesome backup/split time PG and would have been super sweet on Nicholas' team w/ Rondo. This way you could argue that splitting time w/ Rondo will prolong his career, or at worst you got a 20/6 guy for 4 years before Rondo takes over full time.

This quote about him from Bird speaks volumes:

"Do I remember Andrew Toney? The Boston Strangler? Yeah, I remember him. I wish we would've had him. He was a killer. We called him the Boston Strangler because every time he got a hold of the ball we knew he was going to score. He was the absolute best I've ever seen at shooting the ball at crucial times. We had nobody who could come close to stopping him. Nobody."

Not even McHale, OMG!

The thing I remember most about Person is that 5 game series against the Celts in 91 where Bird practically cracked his head open on the court. He was an ASSASSIN in that series. 26 ppg, 55% from 3!

Here's the video:
