He's 6-8. In this era of the NBA, when teams go small, Mash can definitely play the 4. Boris Diaw has played the 5 for the Suns in recent years, listing at...6-8. I'm not saying teams actually tried to utilize Mash at the 4, but in a small-ball setting, it's not at all a stretch.

def agree with this. he could play the 5 on offense (and so could a lot of other guys with his size and skill), as long as his responsibilities weren't the same as a traditional 5. i remember him as having post skills as well.

was more concerned with the defensive end. if he hasn't guarded 4's much before, its tough to extrapolate size into defensive ability, because post defense is so different than perimeter defense (tricks, off the ball/on the ball positioning, defensive rebounding from a post position rather than perimeter, etc)

Yeah, depending on who my guys were playing, there would definitely be a bit more of a help/swarm scheme going on with Mash at the 4 if we were up against a talented offensive four and five. Also very dependent on whether Thomas or Yao is on the floor with him. With Yao, we might really go with a challenge your man/let Yao defend the paint thing (unless Yao were having to guard Shaq/Hakeem/Robinson/Ewing/Duncan). There are certain circumstances where it would work on the defensive end, and certain circumstances where we'd go Phoenix/NellieMavericks and just say "we won't be great defensively for this stretch, but we're gonna give you matchup nightmares and outscore you."

We could also take Finley or Melo off the floor (playing the other one at 2 regardless), play Mash at the 3, Thomas at the 4, and Yao at the 5 and have a nice defensive lineup everywhere except PG (so far), but with lots of frontcourt size (6-8, 6-9, 7-5) to make up for that deficiency on the defensive end.

Obviously, my team is shaking up to be an offense-first sort of team, but I think Yao and my last two picks are shoring up the interior and help defense end of things to make us decent.

I like the point about his injuries. It's much more acceptable in my mind to have injury-prone guys as bench players rather than starters.

Alright I hate making people wait, and the 2 people I was talking about trades suddenly stopped PMing me. Their loss I suppose. My pick will be up shortly.
