PG talent was surprisingly deep this draft, whereas PF/C was pretty thin after the first round.

Round 6; Pick 206 - Bruce Bowen




While I feel that I've put together a fairly complete team through five rounds, one key element was missing - an elite wing defender. Luckily, I get one of the best of the modern era here. Bruce Bowen has made five straight all-defensive first teams (and counting). Only three other draft-eligible perimeter defenders have matched this feat - Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Gary Payton. Not bad company. While Bowen will never be confused for a good offensive player, his excellent 3-point shooting (.391 for his career) means that defenses will not be able to double off him, so he will not hurt me on that end of the floor. Some may have shied away from him because they think that his peak started very late in his career. But looking at DRtg and PER36 stats, it looks like it was mostly a matter of playing time. Bowen actually had career highs in steals and blocks per minute in his first season in the NBA. So I think his skillset has been fairly steady throughout his career, San Antonio was just the first team smart enough to figure out how to best utilize him.

In the grand scheme of things, this pick is all about balance. I already have a wide variety of scoring options on my team (slashers, shooters, post players), and I have excellent post defense. With the addition of Bowen, I now have a truly elite wing defender to go with a truly elite post defender (and here elite means elite, not the watered-down usage you see so often in this thread). The plan is to start Gay and bring Bowen off the bench, but they will split time depending on matchups (you better believe that he will be getting starter minutes when I face teams with players like Jordan or Kobe). This pick also adds balance to my team in another sense. With the Ruland pick, I gave my team a very talented core for the first few years of the league. But now, I also have three players who have maintained near-peak production very later into their careers (Mutombo, Detlef, Bowen), as well as a 21-year-old Rudy Gay will still be at his peak when most players in the league (drafted at 24) will be slowing down. I feel that my team now has both a balanced offense and a balanced defense, and will have plenty of talent both at the start and ten years down the road.

Very nice pick, I was considering Bowen here, thats a tough team.

I've been waiting for Bowen to get picked for about 2 rounds now. Really dislike the Posey pick (and the Pressey pick to a lesser degree) with Bowen still on the board.

Bowen's career arc made him pretty much impossible to pick up until around now. He also wasn't very good on offense until he came to SA, where they were smart enough to park his ass in the corner and hardly move. You can do that here, too, but not having a post presence like Timmah hurts him a bit.

Still, like the pick here.

I think Bowen is such a great fit on so many teams (i.e. any of the guys who drafted 1-10 or otherwise have a very good penetrating PG or post player) that you can easily pick him.

Bowen is one of the players hurt the most by this format though. Go take a look at his basketball-reference stats, his first year he only played a single minute, and then there was three more years of him being a reserve. All of these years are post-23, so you're going to have to make EPeen type of arguments for how he could have been just as good, his coaches just didn't see it until he got to Miami. His first All-Defense nod didn't come until he was 29. So maybe he was just a defensive stud buried on the bench because his coaches didn't use him properly until he was 29, but that's a pretty big argument.

I also have issues with Ruland and Bowen, I'm not sure whether it's smart to try and build for both now and the future, if you're going to draft someone who has a two or three year window, I'd want to surround him with talent during that window, not grab someone who comes of age after he's already injured and broken down. I'd rather go for a higher, shorter peak than a smaller, more consistent one.
