when i left, Mike Miller was the last pick (I liked it alot) I'm going to give my thoughts and than read through the entire thread (standard)
Samuel Dalembert
I love this pick. Alex, I really love your team. I hate admitting it because I really dislike Kobe, but I think you've addressed all your needs; built to your strength; and are in a position to draft the BPA. Your interior defense has an OK post defender and good weakside help defender - it could use work, but not terrible. Your perimeter defense has a lockdown defender when necessary and a guy with a height advantage that he wont hurt you, either. So really, I think your defense is fine. Offensively, wow, your team is just so money. I love it.
I don't think Sammy D is a reach here, compared to the other Cs taken recently (smits, okafor, davis, big z) he matches up alright. He wont really be expected to do alot on offense, and his major strength (rebounding) was an area you needed. He can run the floor too, or play halfcourt. (has done both already) You dont really have injury issues on your team either.
Anyway, your team is shaping up to be average defensively and elite offensively, and I cant help but feel you just have all the key components of a championship level squad. Alright, enough love, let's move on.
Vin Baker
I'm going to try not to be a homer here, but I hate the pick. Tbach and I talked about Vin Baker a while ago, and Tbach was of the opinion even if he was going to average 30/15 since he screwed the Cs so much, he would never draft him. I wasn't as staunch an anti-Baker guy, but his obvious faults (worse than DC) aren't made up by as much talent. (Weaker defender, not terribly efficient offensively, was never an above average rebounder-just logged tons of mins) couple this with the baggage and the weird spot on your team, I'm not sure I like it.
What Vin could do really well is create on his own (when sober) and with CP3 running the show, you don't really need guys to do anything other than be able to finish, run the court, and perhaps hit a midrange. (He was a better post player than pick and pop IIRC) Eh, I'm being a homer here, he fits in with your team and I probably shouldnt criticize it too much since he does have upside. I'll hold off more thoughts for now.
Mark Jackson
You're better than that! I figured he'd go soon, but I still think there are 2 better PGs available. I do think he's better straight up than Rod Strickland though since he was such a consummate "team" guy.
He fits your team well, since I can imagine him penetrating and dishing to Alvin, pick and rolling with the mailman, or pick and popping with Antawn. In fact, with three guys who do like the ball, he's a great fit offensively since he is great at putting people in a position to score. (clearly he's one of the best passers ever)
You note that he's not one to score much, but I think with your forwards, you should be fine scoring wise. Defensively, Mark Jackson wasn't that good, which is why I still think there are better available. You may have some trouble matching up with certain teams, and i'll leave it at that - in essence, this is a solid pick, nothing extraordinary, but I think a "+1" for team fit.
Toni Kukoc
Blah, I wanted this guy. Hate saying it, but it looks like HSP made a nice quality pick! When pip/jordan left, he led his team in points/rebs/assists, he was a 6th man of the year, he has the height to play 3 different positions.
He actually was pretty good defensively as well, although DRtg isn't a great stat since he did land on fairly great defensive teams. (Those bulls) He had a long career which is a nice bonus, and was able to play several systems. (As you allude, he could be the #1 option, the guy off the bench, defense first, the slasher, creator, whatever) Such a flexible guy, and on your team, with 2 chuckers in Charles and Starbury, I love the addition of a pass-first team guy where winning is #1.
In fact, team wise, it's looking like you have drafted well since Starbury. Will be interesting to see who rounds out your starting 5. So - kudos HSP, job well done.
Jason Terry
WTF, why are people drafting so well? Terry is one of the BPA that I had my mind on. Dallas fans say he's a shoot-first guy who doesn't have a high bball IQ, but... They forget he was the ~2nd option on a near championship team, for all his faults is a very efficient scorer, and has been very durable. People rag on him defensively, but the problem is generally he's guarding the SG, which presents a problem.
I do dislike the way you've built your team though. I think Terry - who is more of a shoot first/slasher type, shouldn't be paired with MJ, since he likes the ball in HIS hands. Also, this wont benefit Camby or JSmoove too much, since he wont create nearly as much for them as he will for himself.
I thought you were going defense-first, so the addition of Terry is a little weird, but.. I suppose this is a case I think you went BPA > Fit, and no one would argue Terry is good value here, but the fit is puzzling. (Esp. decision to play him as the 1, but with MJ, I suppose playing him at the 2 and MJ at the 3 would be even weirder)
