I wasn't sure about Biedrins this early, but then a saw Mr. Starbury was in favor, and now, meh. Was hoping he'd be around in the fourth though.

First I'm going to acknowledge all of the faults with this pick. He came into the league at 31 after he had lost some of the mobility from his salad days. He played only 26 mpg in the first 6 years of his career. He would miss anywhere from 10-20 games per season. Cool.

Now here's this:
Arvydas was the complete package. He could shoot (.574 career TS%), he could pass (3.1 assists per 36), he could rebound (10.9 rebounds per 36), and he could defend (career 97 DRtg and averaged just under 10 DWS/season). He fits in perfectly with Hill and Kemp because he'll spread the floor (he could play inside and out) and will also play great team ball, which along with Hill's great passing will make up for Kemp's passing deficiencies. With how few big men are left, I figure I'd take one that could take just about any center heads up. My team will now be a weapon on both ends, as I will space the floor, have great passing and great finishing. Now I just need to add some shooting. And there should be no doubts about my team on the defensive end as I have three VERY solid defensive players (all had great individual defensive numbers and also their teams were consistently in the top 10 in the NBA in defensive efficiency.)

Oh yeah and his PER average was 21.2. Not too shabby.

Still not convinced? Check out the youtube clip (NBA starts around 2:20, but the international clips are fun to watch as well. Also the song is da bomb so blast your speakers homie.)

Team so far: SF Grant Hill, PF Shawn Kemp, C Arvydas Sabonis
can a mod edit this in to the other thread please?

absolutely love the pick of biedrins. he was on my wishlist. he can def. run, you can go small and play him at c or pair him with another big guy. real good shot blocker, but im not convinced he can play the part of a centerpiece for a defensive team (yet) but that's only because the warriors had awful defenders around him (aside from one guy who is reasonable at defense). he has no midrange game, and thats why stats like "O-Rtg" are flawed, but he's the guy i had in mind about berri's article on guys who are the most efficient do not equal best player to run an offense through, which makes sense.
but he's a scrapper, has long arms, grabs boards... he's just fantastic.

the two worries are:
1. minutes. for whatever reason (people jokingly say Nelson is afraid of giving minutes to anyone who could be labeled a "center") he doesn't get many. esp. on a team which is not deep whatsoever, this is bizarre. (He only got 27 minutes on the GSW last year, and for his career is under 22.8 - is it a stamina issue?)
2. fouls. dude averages 5.2 per 36 mins! lol. i know that if i play you, andris is a lock to foul out vs shaq. this is something andris will likely learn with age, but in this format, he is overzealous with blocking shots, which leads to putting people at the line. this works both ways too - for a big guy who is insanely efficient, (lol, 62.6% FG% this year!) he doesn't get to the line often. so... we know he's athletic, is great at finishing around the rim, but... no post game yet, either.

a couple other notes is for a big guy he doesn't turn the ball over much, but he also isn't a deft passer yet. clearly these have to do with him just not touching the ball that much in the warriors offense, and so far it looks like your offense will parallel theirs. (one last note, 19.2 PER as a 21 yr old is sooo money)

edit: Also, the reason he doesn't get PT normally one would say is BECAUSE of his foul problems. on some teams (like this years hawks) that is true, but Don Nelson doesn't believe in "foul trouble". If you've watch GSW games you know what im talking about - Biedrins even w. 0 fouls just doesn't get mondo minutes.

He is very young though and does have some upside I think he would be available later but I can't really smash a big man pick.
going to chime in here, that actually his defensive metrics are really solid despite playing on such a poor defensive team. this speaks volumes about his defense. (as in, its good) career 104 (which is ~avg or so) on THAT team is so money.

i thought he would've slipped further too, but big men who are money around the basket, are solid at d, and can play a running game are getting rarer, so i dont hate the reach whatsoever.

yeah i think bobbo very accurately measured the problems with the guy. i don't think he's a reach as there aren't too many centers available. at the same time, putting him on this team would be like sticking an extra seth into the cohens instead of ryan. too much of what you already got.

Mason is an ok pick but I wouldn't have taken him there. Ellis is fair value.

I don't think any of the last 4 picks have been great values, but they all serve their purpose.

cuz some of us think trading is gayballs considering this is just for fun and isn't some major competition.

you think so? I dunno, going by centers already gone, i think it's fair to say sabonis is a better player (without a doubt) than biedrins. but can you really picture 7'3 sabonis, with foot problems to boot, playing in a fast paced offense with 'nique and kj? i can't, he'd make it halfway up the court until he starts trudging back. same deal with a few of the big men: certainly better players than biedrins, but here the fit IS perfect.

wouldn't it just divulge into picking the player with the highest VORP at every given moment?
