Round 8, pick 296
Ronnie Brewer, SG/SF
I need some more depth at the wings, and while this pick is based partially on potential, I feel like the evidence at hand warrants taking Brewer now. We don't have a large body of work to go by, but Brewer showed significant improvement in his second season-- and he's still only 22. He'll probably improve for a couple of years, at least, and if he puts together a healthy and consistent career at that level, this will look like a major steal.
Brewer's minutes were limited in his first season, but he still showed promise in the 12 minutes a game he got. In his second season, Brewer played in and started 76 games, playing 27 minutes a game. And while sample size may play a part here, there's no doubt been concrete improvement in his play.
His shooting improved significantly, as his field goal percentage jumped 30 points and he went from a .675 to .759 FT%. As a result, his TS% went from .566 to .612 and his PER went from 15.2 to 18.4. He's clearly worked to improve his shot-- another good sign, as a young player's development has much to do with the amount of work he's willing to put into his game.
More stats: His offensive rating went up from 115 to 124 (his team's was 113). His DRtg is pretty consistent with his team's, but he's averaged 2.2 steals per 36 for his career to date, which is a positive sign. So he's a good offensive player (who may become very good) and an average to above-average defender, at least. And he's improving.
His per-36 averages last season: 15.8 / 3.8 / 2.3 / 2.2 points / rebounds / assists / steals. He can do a bit of it all.
Sure, it could be a fluke, and we can't extrapolate too much, but the preponderance of evidence indicates he is a good, young player who is only getting better.
He'll fit my team well, possibly as a backup swingman early, but I suspect in a few years (especially if their current career trajectories continue) he'll team with Calderon in the backcourt. I suspect he'd be better served as the starter, with Francis as an instant-offense sixth-man type, and if his growth as a player continues, he'll be good enough to fill that role admirably. (Even though he can play 2 or 3, this team's abundance of 3s means he'll almost certainly see most of his time at SG.)
I feel like this team can match up well with anyone, and has capable and versatile players who will work together well. We may not be the best at anything in particular, but we have a very efficient offense with no real holes, and good (if not great) defenders whose positional flexibility will allow me to exploit matchups.
