there is a list of 6 guys i want to fall to me when i traded down, and im officially SHOCKED they have not been picked yet. i'm totally going BPA, i dont care about filling out my starting 5 yet, simply bc there is a lot of value to be had. i wish i really traded down alot, these rounds are where the most value is won.

i will say tho if all 6 get taken in the 21 picks i will be pretty upset at myself.

looks like Alex has the youngest team so far, or technically the most "modern". not a single player over the age of 30 as of 2008.

Though I only started watching basketball in the mid 90's, I tried to be as objective as possible when making my picks. I could've been biased though, maybe because I had a better idea of how the modern players would fit.

That seems to be so, but I really like how your team looks right now. Very good balance imo.

Kobe Bryant - SG
Al Jefferson - PF
Rashard Lewis - SF
Samuel Dalembert - C
Kirk Hinrich - PG

My useless thoughts on the last few picks...

David West - A little concerned about his health and relatively low efficiency for a bulk scorer, but otherwise I think this is a nice pick and a great fit for Hakeem. Pairing a post-up center with a solid jump-shooting power forward is a recipe for success imo.

AC Green - with that pick, I think JOA takes over the best 4 man squad. Talk about a perfect fit... DRod was more of a driver than a post guy, and you've paired him with an extremely efficient garbage man... one who never got injured and played for a gillion years. . Another great steal and pick for JOA methinks.

Ricky Pierce - I'll be honest, at first this pick had me scratching my head. I thought for sure you were going to go with an elite defender/role-player based on your PG, so initially I didn't like it. But after reading your write-up and learning that you planned to use Ricky as a sixth man, I see that it makes perfect sense. There are craploads of defensive guards left in the draft, but very few guys left who can score in bulk and score that efficiently.. An added bonus is that RP has put in time as a sixth man, and thrived very well in that position. Nice work.

Kirk Hinrich - I can't add much that hasn't already been said.. overall I think it's a good solid pick. I'm sort of on the fence as to whether the year before last was a fluke or not.

Dale Davis vs. AC Green - I think DD is better suited on KC's team than AC. Vlade is a crafty defender, but physicality has never been his strong suit. Dale Davis provides that presence and shot blocking that AC wasn't known for. It may have been a reach pick-wise, but as other teams have shown the BPA is rarely going to be the best fit... who knows where he would have gone though.

My biggest beef with Hinrich is he's likely peaked. He was a 4-year college boy, improved a little over a couple of years and had a very good '06-'07.. then a way down year this season, but those bulls be poison. I'm willing to consider that an anomaly, but only to a certain degree. His '06-'07 year is probably his ceiling, a little below that is what I'd hope to be getting the next 4-5 years if I traded for him as a GM.

Though he can shoot the 3, he's not amazing at it and he doesn't really get to the rim too much, hence his low eFG%. A lot of jumpers (84% last year by 82games.com standards).

There are some better PGs available, imo, but if you get the solid Hinrich and not the awful one I like the fit better. Solid, safe pick.

Sure he does, he just has no clue what to do when he gets there. Overpenetration without a plan ftw.

That's probably my biggest knock on the Kobe team - it'll be one of the poorest BBIQ teams in the draft outside of Bryant.

also let's get a lot of picks in today people I'm relatively soon due to my blockbuster megadeal that had Clark wandering around his house repeating "wha' happened?"

I like it. It's gotta be one of the best offensive teams in the league.

Edit- I don't think the IQ is that much of a concern. The frontcourt is pretty ******ed, but with Kobe and Hinrich (I don't think he's that ******ed, just stuck on a team full of ******s), it should be alright. And Lewis has done well co-existing with other great scorers.

I think that Dalembert and Hinrich were both pretty lousy picks. There was so much better talent at those positions imo. As a team it doesn't look so bad, but I really didn't like either pick.

I have a good idea of who I'm going to pick, just waiting on SD.

May be gone for parts of the afternoon but at the very least I'll be around this evening.

I don't know much about Rashard Lewis - how does he get his points? Does he work well off the ball?

The thing about this team is that there isn't a great passer in the bunch. A lot of great scorers, but I see a lot of one on one basketball. Each will be effective, but I don't think this is a team where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I don't pick for a while, but I definitely want to trade up if you're interested.

Cool...who is "we"? I live with Eddie(SirFelixCat on 2p2), his gf, my other friend Anthony, and his gf right near intersection of Pecos/Windmill. Do you wanna play ball sometime today? Eddie is probably sleeping in late, but if we played in the evening I could convince him to play maybe...but anytime is fine for me.

kind of OT, but this thread has kind of hit a wall with the lack of posts in the last few hours. i'm having a live draft in a couple weeks for this summer league i'm player-coaching in, and was curious if anyone had any strategy advice.

the details: the player pool is essentially the same quality as the average pickup game at a college gym (minus the bottom 25% who absolutely suck). it plays kind of like a pickup game too: not really much post play, but definitely more passing and more solid fundamentals (maybe 90% have played organized ball before). 9 players for each of the 8 teams, everyone is 18-24 and in pretty decent shape, and we get 2 days of maybe 3 hours each to 'scout' the talent.

what kind of team should i be trying to draft?
essentially this question is: if you went to go play pickup and had to draft a team of pretty decent IQ basketball players, what would you be looking for?

PGs and Bigmen make the world go round. Also what is the scoring? 2 for 3 pointers and 1 for Fgs? This make 3 point shooters very valuable and you could have to switch your strategy. If it's 3 and 2 for 3 points and 2 pointers, then I think you go with a smart PGs and a Bigmen first.

It really depends on how you play, but the teams that generally win the most are the teams that have a lot of good, athletic defenders. It's easy to pick up scrap buckets here and there, and if you can play good perimeter defense (especially with 1s and 2s) and control the boards, you generally win. I think that means start off with a big man, but if you have 5 high IQ players who are all athletic, even if they're not great on offense, you will generally win IMO.

i should have clarified this.

there are 2 'real refs' (like i think $30-40/hr high-school quality refs), we play on a high-school sized court, 5 on 5, etc. full high school rules, 8? minute quarters, 3 and 2 scoring, etc, etc.

also because i'm player coaching, my team starts out with me. i'm probably going to be somewhere between the 1st and 5th biggest (er, tallest) guy depending who plays. i can PnR but am soft so I love to pop. In this league, I'm pretty similar to Webber

Is a high school sized court smaller than college/NBA? I thought they were all the same?

I think a solid PG might be the best option here with your first pick.

Pay attention to the little things like hustle and basketball IQ if you can. Most others will probably be wowed by offense only...definitely try to draft players who are getting back on D every time and who are looking to set picks away from the ball on O.

Are you playing 2s and 1s or 3s and 2s? Obviously matters a ton with regards to shooting.
