I've been saying this for a long time. Everyone thinks it was a run-the-floor offense with Jrich/Kmart/VC and Kidd running the show. No, it was successful because the bigmen played defense, Kidd was an excellent defender, and they got *enough* scoring to win.
Still, those teams only advanced because the East was disgusting.
My memory is very biased, but the early 2000s, it was essentially:
1a. LA Lakers
1b. San Antonio Spurs
.
.
2. Sacto Kings
3. Portland T'blazers
.
.
.
.
.
4. Dallas Mavericks (their ascension)
5. Minnesota T'Wolves (sorta)
.
.
.
6. Pacers, Nets, Pistons
