After drafting a couple of bigs, especially two guys who are great without the ball and excellent pick 'n roll players, I felt it was time to draft a guard who would excel in both. I feel Jeff Hornacek is the perfect player because he could shoot, drive, and pass with the best of them. Also, he represents another high basketball IQ, unselfish, team oriented player to go along with the two I've got.
Attributes:
Durability and Longevity - Hornacek played 14 seasons, and the most action he missed was 15 games, which happened once. His only missed 5 one other time in his career.
Versatility - Jeff played the point in Phoenix until Kevin Johnson Arrived, and played SG for much of his career. He's come off the bench and started, he's been the teams first, second, and third options, and done them all with the same level of consistency.
Consistency - Jeff has a career PER of 17.7, and if you exclude his rookie season, this number has been rock-steady for most of his career. That is quite an accomplishment considering he has played for multiple teams.
Shooting - His career True Shooting % of .582, Free Throw % of .877, and FG% .496 are excellent for a mid volume shooter.
Defense - Jeff was an average to above average defender. While his career Defensive Rating was 108, he did manage to rack up 96 Defensive Win Shares along with 1.4 steals a game.
Even though he was a capable defender, defense had little to do with my choice. Jeff was consistently one of the most efficient offensive players in the league, and has playmaking capabilities to boot. His mid and long range shooting ability will make defending a Laimbeer/Garnett PnR extremely tough, and defenders will be punished for leaving Jeff when KG is in the post.
Team so far:
Kevin Garnett - PF
Bill Laimbeer - C
Jeff Hornacek - G (dunno which yet)
