I like the Melo pick. Once again, I doubt he will keep getting better and better as sammykid assumes, but if he just keeps doing what he is doing, that's pretty good value here. Now, if you could only find a coach who would convince him to stop trying 3s....

can someone explain this to me?

http://www.basketball-reference.com/...johnsam01.html

Amir Johnson has a career 18.1 PER averaging 4/4/.5

My understanding of PER was that totals matter, but definitely aren't the be-all end-all.

hate pairing yao with a guy who can't hit threes.

PER is a per possession stat.

And I hate putting Carmelo on a team that can't hit 3s too(like the Nuggets)...thats why I like putting him with Yao- it sets your strategy to get some good 3 point shooters in the next few picks and then you have a good all around team.

He's 11/11/4 blocks per 36 minutes and a .600 TS. Still pretty weird though.

Edit: and a lot of his minutes are probably garbage time

amir johnson played 764 minutes this year---not a horrible sample. he definitely projects to being a starter in the NBA and would be a slam dunk third overall pick in this year's draft.

i agree, alot of carmelo's value is in isos, because he's one of the best 1 on 1 players. are you really going to rotate yao out on the high post or elbow to get the ball to a guy who cant score as well in the post? carmelo isn't a good enough spot off shooter to work off the ball, he likes the ball in his hands.

carmelo is a good slasher, and the reason this works well in denver's offense is camby plays the point position (because george karl is nuts, i may add) and often distributes the ball, when iverson is off ball/shooters stacked on the side, it's a play you see run all the time in denver's offense (and they try to sneak kenyon in for an alleyoop, i was talking to gka about this because i see the hornets run this alot, but david west in carmelo's shoes and tyson chandler instead of kenyon throwing it down).

anywayyyy yao needs floor space, and the one thing carmelo doesn't do well is his 3s. he has a complimentary post game as well, btu with yao on the block, dont know how often he'll use it.

defensively, well, good thing you have yao down low...

There are a couple of guys I would have def taken ahead of Melo there that would have really paired well w/ Yao, at multiple positions too.

They'll hopefully be the only two guys on my team who aren't great three-point shooters. Melo gives you a guy who can create off the dribble and get to the line and command doubles, Yao gives you the great low-post scoring presence, you fill in your role players with guys who can defend and pop the 3-ball.

yeah, this is a good argument, and the one bad thing about examining teams round by round - we have no clue who the other 3 guys on the floor will be. on the surface though, it's a weird pairing.

What's the stat that shows the PER differential of one player, say KG, and the guy he guarded, say Rasho Nesterovic?

check 82games.com, although it's such a flawed metric. but yeah, net per is an intriguing stat, IIRC KG led this category this year. (not surprising)

If this is going to turn into a PER contest then this will be the biggest waste of time ever.

Dying to trade up.

It's already the biggest waste of time ever. Which is why it's so awesome.

The picks themselves haven't tilted me as bad as the combination of the first/second round picks.

I really don't think it's possible to make bad picks in the first couple rounds just picking good players. Rounds 3-6 are where "fit" really starts to become super important.

As long as no one takes two point guards or anything ******ed like that in the first two rounds it's kinda hard to screw up.
