Why did they agree to the fight if GSP was so far away from being ready?

It was meant to be July ish until GSP delayed it.

My guess is they were pretty thirsty for GSP to return. Just bought UFC for 4B and new owners seem to be clueless.

Once they realized those PPV #'s with CM and Ronda were probably an aberration they realized they needed to bring GSP back ASAP.

I am sad for GSP but i am ok with it if Romero gets the fight.
Getting back to why UFC was great.
Legit contender gets the title fight.

I couldn't care less for GSP at this point tbh. Have a tune-up fight or two and then issue a more or less legitimate challenge. Extreme bumhunting of the only dude you can beat in the top 5 seems like a money grab to me.

I was mildly intrigued but very doubtful he is gonna be the star UFC wants him to be. His last fight with Hendricks was his lowest PPV sales in like 8 years. His style is boring and after a few novelty type fights I think no one will really care.

And there are no real "big names" in the 170 division for him to fight.

Think he is probably worth fading from a betting standpoint though. Oddsmakers had him like -160 vs Bisping. That's a lot of respect for a guy that has been off 4 years and moving up in weight. I'd probably make WB or Woodley a fav over him.

Why do you like Yair over Edgar?

Yair has looked good but this is a huge jump in comp for him, seems like a fight Edgar can use his wrestling to win rds and he is an elusive, smart fighter. Probably not just gonna get kicked in the head constantly like say BJ Penn his last fight. I just have a tough time seeing Frankie getting walked over like that. But I do tend to have a bias towards established legend fighters, one blind spot I do have with MMA (liked Ronda, Aldo vs Nunes, CM)

Edgar's just never been tagged like that, not even by Aldo really. Seems like a big step up in comp for Yair to just come in and outclass 1 of the best FW's of all time. I know Yair's TDD is improving but we'll see. Frankie's ran through this division besides Aldo and Yair's never seen anyone close to him.

Maia/Masvidal, I don't have that much of an opinion on really. I just think Masvidal is a little overrated. Cerrone fights like 5 times a year, was due to hit a wall. Still think Maia controls that fight with grappling. But if it stays standing then yeah he probably loses.

Frankie is 35.5 years old in a very light weight class against the top young challenger in the division. Clash of styles could favor either guy, if Frankie were earlier 30s I'd be more apt to pick him.

Masvidal has elite takedown defense and a very very high fight IQ. His main drawback usually is passivity leading to losing a split decision - that's not a factor in this fight. The default position is Masvidal winning on the feet, Maia is the one who has to change that. Masvidal's jab is going to be in his face all day keeping range and distance.

I definitely see the merits in the other side of both fights and won't be surprised in the least if they win.

I hope yair wins, ufc needs a new star & yair can be one with his style & his pull hopefully from the mexican/latin american market.

I'm much more comfortable backing Masvidal than Yair, the Yair pick just comes down to Frankie's age.

if Yair wins think he fights Holloway/Aldo winner?

Can't really do Edgar/Aldo 3 as Aldo outclassed him too easily at 200. Edgar/Holloway maybe.

Masvidal has like zero shot tbh, maia way too big, too dominant a wrestling & bjj player. Masvidal will lose in the first rnd via submittion imo, will lose to woodley though due to horrible style matchup.

Dustin vs alvarez have a chance of being fight of the night, don't sleep on that fight.

edgar /maia seem no brainer...
35 still ain't old but getting there (37-38 clear the decline start there for a lot of fighters but not 35)

You're wrong.

You're comparing 185 and up to lighter weight classes. The lighter the weight class - the more it's a young man's game.

Name me the fighter at lightweight and below that hadn't declined by 35.

Definitely possible, depends on the performance.

Edgar is not getting a shot at Aldo again, correct. Frankie needs to hope for a Holloway win or he should just go head and drop to 135 - he and his team say he can make it.

Btw, I love Frankie. My first UFC bet was a winning parlay (lol me) of Frankie vs Hermes Franca and Forrest vs Rampage. His fight vs Tyson Griffin was one that made me a UFC fan.
