Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

jake shields grappling

Jake systematically dismantles Jon Fitch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKTgWUYsNB8

Jake beats Diego Sanchez at ADCC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kFSN...eature=related

Jake chokes out Leo Santos. If you don't know grappling, Leo Santos is ****ing legit and flying armbarred GSP in <1 minute the only time GSP went to ADCC.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx2wa...eature=related

Jake loses to Marcelo Garcia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kocZH...eature=related

That's ok, because Marcelo Garcia is God On A Grappling Mat.

Jake is a legit high-level BJJ competitor.

In order to be choked out, Henderson has to turn his back to Shields. Henderson basically never turned his back and just accepted the punishment from mount because Shields doesn't hit too hard. If he had turned his back he probably would have been choked out.

In fairness, I'm drunk right now and I could be wrong, but I see Mayhem running his mouth and then getting jacked by several dudes.

Mayhem got in the ring very quickly, for a reason -- Strikeforce wanted him in there. Then people lost their **** and an ugly incident happened.

I fail to see how this is Mayhem's fault at all, like even 1%.
Mayhem shouldn't have barged in like a giant douche. Him doing that started the chain of events that caused the brawl. Even if they told him to go in there, you don't interrupt the guy's interview in front of his entire team, who are known for being ill-tempered idiots. You wait until they call you for a proper faceoff, doing what he did was stupid. Mayhem is absolutely at least partially at fault.

Obviously the gang-jumping and pounding afterwards by the diaz bros was the worst offense. Basically assault. But mayhem's idiocy played a role.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

On second thought, I may be overrating Shields slightly as a MW.

I absolutely think he's the #2 WW in the world. I think he's a clear #2 over Fitch or Alves based on talent, if not a 'who beat who'.

At MW, he's probably top 5. Henderson was either #2 or #3 at MW coming into this fight, and it's a huge, huge win for Shields. That said, Henderson looked bigger, not in very good shape, and old in this fight. It shouldn't diminish the result too much, but it should be taken into consideration. Plus, Shields only has a couple of fights at MW, where guys like Maia, Marquart, Sonnen all have extensive records in the division. Shields should definitely be top 5 at MW but it's debatable where you put him.

Also, not sure about the source for this, but apparently Coker is angry Mayhem was even in the ring, aka this was not a set up 'hype a fight' opportunity. it sounds like it was all mayhem.

Yeah. Because anyone in the audience could've run into the cage without catching a beating from security, too.

Bull****. No freaking way.

I agree that Mayhem is a prick, but that's part of his awesomeness! He didn't do a damned thing wrong tonight, imo -- he was allowed into that cage to run some publicity, then the ghetto **** in Shields' camp went all ghetto ****. The end.

is it called the d'arce choke that you can hold his neck in fullmount and then move yourself off of it on the side and its pretty much over? seems reaaaally effective the times i've seen someone pull it off, usually from mount.

no the d'arce choke is from the sprawl position like so

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wz62NL2JtM

There is a head and arm choke from the top where you move off to the side to finish. But in general it's not a high-percentage move, especially against higher-level fighters.

Dana on why Nick Diaz is not in the UFC

http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma....lv2&gid=230864

White said at Wednesday's UFC 109 press conference that Nick Diaz is talented enough to be in the UFC, he just doesn't know how to "play the game."

"The last time Nick Diaz was in the UFC, he got into a fist fight in the hospital -- you know what I mean? -- with the guy that he fought here. You can't do that kind of stuff. You know, the kid is very talented, and he probably should be in the UFC, but that kind of stuff has got to stop."

quotes form UFC 109. looooooooooooooooooooooooooool

seems like theyre pretty much putting it together in the wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arm_triangle_choke

from personnal experience of hearing the darce choke mentionned in MMA fights, it seems even commentators arent sure when to use which term or w/e.

Super lulz at Mauro during that brawl -- "Gentlemen, we're on national television!"

I say, sirs, your less-than-gentlemanly conduct might be considered appalling by some of our nouveau viewers, please refrain from any more tomfoolery or ballyhoo.

The D'arce specifically refers to the front-sprawl version of the choke, and is named after a guy named D'arce who invented it.

in general wiki is not great for submissions, they tend to group everything together. It is a head and arm choke, but it's different than the one from mount. Different techniques completely.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

Fun fact: Who gave the D'arce choke its name?

The aforementioned Mayhem Miller, after D'arce tapped him with it repeatedly.

It's also worth noting that D'arce didn't invent the choke, any more than Mino invented the anaconda choke.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

Ha, no, didn't even notice the wiki! I remember some interview with Mayhem from, I dunno, maybe two years ago, where he talked about it.

People are freaking out on some of the mma forums about the brawl last night, as if MMA won't be sanctioned anywhere because of that. Come on. Kevin Garnett threw an elbow last night, oh noes, there goes professional basketball!

It will be interesting to see what kind of suspensions, if any, come out of this though.

Shields and the Diaz bros should get the harshest suspensions/fines, all Mayhem did was interrupt Shields, which is pretty rude, but not as bad as punching/kicking someone for being rude.

Bad night for strikeforce, was very surprised that Hendo lost and the fight in the end was pretty bad for MMA. Fights weren't exactly the ones you hope for to attract more MMA fans.
Good job by Dana White I guess for letting him go

I don't think Shields did THAT much wrong. Pushing Miller away while Miller interrupted his interview was wrong but whatever. The Diaz brothers just don't belong in society imo. They're true pieces of scum and pretty damn dangerous given how good they are at fighting and how hot-tempered they are. They're terrible for the sport. It's called mixed martial arts, not street fighting. Discipline and self defense is a key aspect of martial arts and it's clear that they don't respect that at all.

Re: MMA Spring/SummerThread

Ok, I finally saw the Silva/Maia fight. A few thoughts....

1. I thought the first 2 rounds were incredible...."boring" would be the last word I'd use. I was just amazed at how foolish Silva made another pro fighter look. The flying knee, the spinning back kick, the precision of his punches, his head movement.....just amazing. I was highly entertained.

2. The last 3 rounds were very slow and boring for sure. But I don't blame Silva at all. No need to risk getting knocked out. He knew he was well ahead on points, so he fought a smart fight. The goal is to win, not to entertain.

3. Silva/GSP or Silva at LHW or HW are the only acceptable future fights for him imo....anything else is a joke, and as I said earlier, I hope he continues to make a mockery out of the sport if Dana won't give him one of these two.

For serious? Maia has a near 0 chance of knocking Silva out with any strike. Rounds 3-5 were bizarre, Silva could've finished the fight anytime he wanted, Maia couldn't take him down and Silva landed any strike he wanted. This fight could've been over in the 1st minute if that's the way Silva wanted it.
