If he finishes the season in last place — which seems quite possible, as L.A. continues to pencil him into its starting lineup, day after day, despite his poor numbers — Pujols will become the first modern2 position player ever to be both baseball’s best and worst player at various points in his career. I quite enjoy how Albert Pujols and Adrian Beltre have rapidly converging WARs.
After 2012, Pujols had 91.2, and Beltre and Beltre had 65.3. Pujols is also younger. The idea that Beltre would one day pass Pujols seemed next to impossible. Pujols looked like an inner circle hall of famer, and Beltre looked like a fringe hall of famer who deserved to get voted in but who would probably not even get much consideration due to being underrated.
At the start of this year, it was 101 to 90.2, and even with Beltre missing time, the gap has narrowed to 99.4 – 94.1.
Pujols might go down as I’m assuming the only player in history to clear 100 WAR, but then play so bad afterwards that he falls out of the 100 WAR club, and how far down he might go is kind of scary. He could easily drop down below 95 if he continues to be a sub replacement player.
Beltre's career also seems impossibly underrated. 6 top 10 MVP finishes, 5 gold gloves, 3000 hits and many more coming, 600 doubles and counting, closing in on 500 home runs. And yet to this point in his career, after 20 seasons, he has only been selected to 4 all star teams.
Pujols has 11 all star games, 10 times in the top 5 of MVP voting including 3 MVP's, and yet pretty soon Beltre will probably pass him for career WAR.
Beltre is at age 38 in his 20th season is somehow having the 2nd best hitting season of his career including his highest OBP ever.
Pujols slash after 10 seasons. 1558 games. .331 BA, .426 OBP, .624 SLG
and now his career OPS has dropped a full 100 points and he probably will retire as a career sub .290 hitter or something if doesn't hurry up retire.
