Rodney's FIP was 7.04 for the inning: justice done.

It's one if the things that's as fresh in my memory as the day I saw it: sitting a small number of rows directly behind homeplate when Tommy Hanson left his breaking ball up and Votto crushed a grand slam to left center basically just using his forearms and wrists.

Legit breathtaking. That was the first time I had MLB seats that weren't the cheapest or near the cheapest, too. And Turner Field's left field power alley was really deep and pitcher friendly.

I was very sunburnt by the time Brooks Conrad hit his walk off grand slam to win 10-9 on the Braves 7-run bottom of the 9th

I remember that game.

A guy called Scott Schebler leads the National League in HRs. Reds have 3 guys with 14+.

For the record, more homeruns were hit at Safeco Field last year than any other stadium.

Yep. Contact rate seems to be most important with power and patience not giving much benefit to a speedster.

That makes sense. I was only following the results on the boxscore, and said it was a sacrifice to the catcher and error on Goldschmidt (assumed catcher threw to him, not Goldschmidt fielding and throwing to third).

No ****. Risking outs with your best hitters up makes no sense. So putting speed in front of your best hitters makes no sense.

3-4-5 hitters tend to strikeout more, walk more, homer more and double more. And you never bunt or "hit'n run" with these guys up.

When would you prioritize having speed on the bases?

When power hitters are up seems like a great time to reduce the effect of a runner being slow. He can advance bases at his leisure on home runs and doubles and walks, and stay put on strikeouts and fly balls. And play it safe in general, because outs are worth more and bases are worth less when power hitters are up.

Speed at the top of the order made sense in Ty Cobb's era of baseball. Back then power hitters didn't exist and everybody was basically a contact guy. Somehow it survived 90 years past when it made sense as a strategy. Guys like Billy Hamilton, Vince Coleman, Rajai Davis would make perfect #7 hitters. They are silly misplaced gadgets at the top of the order.
Except 3/4/5 hitters also single more. And sure they get more doubles, but not sure why that cuts against having a speedy runner on. A slow runner on first is no guarantee to score on a double.

It's true that SBs are less worth the risk in front of the heart of the order but it's not at all clear that speed in general is less valuable.

Well he's hitting .228 and is striking out 21.5% of the time, but either way that's not the best pairing of stats to back up that claim.

.228/.313/.433 isn't setting the world on fire, but it doesn't suck.

Hamilton killing it on the ARM metric for whatever that's worth. Also eye test, his arm doesn't look weak to me. Average, maybe a little better in strength, not sure about accuracy.
