Yea. His stuff is incredible. Just needs to get a little better control of it and learn when to throw certain pitches. A little more experience and he's going to be awesome (hopefully).

Think he's given up 2 HRs already this year, but again I'm chalking it up to inexperience.

Oh but of course.

Not really sure why Strop closed this one out instead of Johnson, but I guess I can't really complain.

Was in the hospital last night with flu like symptoms.

Hmm. I had the game volume turned down towards the end with some company over... but how I didn't hear about it before this is borderline mind blowing.

Gonna see if Roch posted anything about it now...

Is anyone following the back and forth with Keith Law and Brendan Hall on twitter?

a) I had no idea the position "High School Sports Co-Editor for ESPNBoston.com" existed
b) I find it pretty interesting that a person of that said position thinks its cool for a high school pitcher to throw 155 pitches and vehemently defends it.
04-24-2012 , 10:27 PM
lol at defending it but high school pitchers throw that many pitches all the time, i've done it multiple times in my playing career and have seen plenty of others do it too and i didn't even have one of those super intense win at all costs coaches...how did it even come up, was it a top HS prospect doing it?

lol @ "all the time" - no

Jeremy Guthrie a class act.

Always nice to see a former Oriole do well outside of the park. Never have I heard anyone with a bad thing to say about Guts.

Listening to the cubs broadcast...'wrong place wrong time' talking about some of the 'great cubs' that never got into the post season...

think they meant 'wrong place'

Yu darvish - great pitcher? or the greatest pitcher?
04-24-2012 , 10:55 PM
Yu's stuff was absolutely incredible tonight. Sometimes it seemed like he wasn't in full control but pure movement made up for that in some spots. He can be really really good.
04-24-2012 , 10:55 PM
Yu has been putting up good numbers against some strong hitting teams (Detroit/Yankees). His stuff definitely looks good... moving fastballs and good breaking balls.
04-24-2012 , 10:57 PM
Outside of his abortion of a first major league inning, Yu's ERA through the last 25 innings pitched is 1.04.

Yanks could have hurt him in the 3rd inning but was nails after that.

For some reason I found this extremely funny (and I'm not normally a big red sox hater)

Not that the Red Sox have been solid this season but their opening 14 games were pretty tough. I know they are going to have to compete with the better teams if they want to make any noise this season. I think that the run of easier games they have now might help bring a bit of confidence into a team that is obviously in disarray.

Getting their relievers into some games that dont involve Rangers, Tigers and Yankees will help. Still not that confident that they can make the playoffs but i do feel that they got the raw talent to make it.

Is there a precedent for guys who sit at 92 and touch 97 to never get any swinging strikes? Henderson Alvarez, through 90 innings, has a 5.8% whiff rate, and something like 56% gb rate. Obviously there are sample size considerations here, but does this make any sense?
04-25-2012 , 11:32 AM
It looks like velocity isn't that big of a factor for whiff rates: http://camdendepot.blogspot.com/2012...fastballs.html

This guy was only looking at 4-seam fastballs, but there is some interesting analysis there.
