One game sample sizes don’t matter.

Unless it’s Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

Interesting read, but I think Pham comes off pretty foolish talking about the contract stuff. He doesn't seem to understand that under the current CBA players don't get paid market value until FA.

I guess we don't know the two year deal he turned down, but I'd guess it was probably in the neighborhood of 2/10ish. The team only has to pay 500k this year and whatever he gets in his first year of arbitration next year.

Kris Bryant set the record for 1st year arb. this year at $10.8M. Seems pretty dumb of Pham not to take the guarunteed money given his injury history, especially when he's not giving up any FA years.

I have the same eye condition that he has, Keratoconus, and I'm amazed he can hit. I've already had 1 cornea replacement and will probably have another soon. That he can even see the baseball is crazy, much less hit it.

I’d assume the offer was lowball. He seems super ****ing smart and quite up to speed on valuations and contracts. He basically dismissed the Cards offer as a joke when he made his decision a month ago or whatever. Just because he knows 6 WAR is worth $48 million or whatever doesn’t mean he thinks he will get that in arbitration.

Man, sucks that Ohtani is an Angel but he’s going to be a blast to watch this year.

He seems extremely intelligent, which is why I can't fathom how he doesn't realize he has 0 leverage and acts like the cardinals should pay him just to pay him. really ****ty situation partially caused by his injuries and partially caused because of having way too many outfielders, but he's pretty much stuck and can't negotiate much.

They should pay him, and not just to pay him but because they've ****ed with his service time and there's no chance he's going to stay with them treating him like an indentured servant. Him correctly being vocal about his treatment is going to hurt the organization a lot more than it would tossing him some $$

that's on the players union negotiating for themselves instead of the future players. By the time he even has a chance to leave he's going to be 31ish and there will be someone else in the pipeline to do what he can do at that age, and thats assuming his eyes dont cause more issues. It's 100% a CBA issue and a Tommy Pham being hurt issue, not an organization being cheap issue (although it is an organization promoting the wrong guy issue, but thats not exactly relevant to what his salary should be)

and they're paying him 6 digits this year and 7 digits next year...lol saying thats treating someone like an indentured servant

Nah. What do you think they offered him? He’s getting 500k this year and let’s call bryants 10.5m his ceiling next year. So 2 for $11m. If he stays healthy and puts up 6+ WAR again.

Team has leverage and he’s made zilch and is 30 and has injury history and they are cheap. I’d expect them to offer him like 2 for $5m. MAYBE $6m. For a guy with his story and attitude etc that’s exactly the kind of offer I’d expect him to snap reject and “bet on himself” as he called it.

Look I root for Tommy Pham. There's a lot to like about him, but he is just wrong in this situation. He comes across as a total Diva. If anything the cardinals were doing him a favor by offering him some security when they didn't have to. Any multi year contract is a huge risk given Pham's injury history and degenerative eye condition.

The cardinals didn't **** with his service time. They had a stacked farm system and very good MLB OF's during those years. Due to unfortunate circumstances and bad luck he got a rough deal.

He didn't advance to AAA until he was 25 due to always being injured. He never had more than 425 PA's in a professional season before last year. He had 680 PA's total in 2015 and 2016, 52% of which came in the Majors.

In 2014 he was excellent in the minors, but the major league OF was Holiday (132 wRC+ 3.6WAR), Jay (115 wRC+ 2.4 WAR), and Allen Craig. Craig sucked that year, but he had earned some rope after stellar 2 years prior (135 wRC+ over nearly 1100 PA's). Even the 4th OF, Peter Bourjos, put up 1.7 WAR over 300 PA. When they replaced Craig they brought up Oscar Taveras instead of Pham. They had similar numbers in AAA that year, but Taveras was widely considered the #1-2 prospect in baseball and had mashed, like Pham, at every level. The difference is that Taveras was doing it while being 4 yrs younger.

In 2015 Pham tore his quad and missed the 1st two months of the season. He fell behind the other prospects, and when the big club needed help they brought up Grichuk and then Piscotty. Both were very good in AAA and put up wRC+ of 138 and 134 respectively in the majors. After coming back from the injury Pham had 193 PA's in AAA before getting called up. He was solid, but not as good as Grichuck or Piscotty with a wRC+ of 126.

In 2016 he made the opening day roster, but tore his oblique during his first PA which resulted in him missing the first 6 weeks of the season. When he was healthy they optioned him to AAA where he struggled (98 wRC+) over 128 PA. Still they called him up to the majors where he contributed very little (0.1 WAR over 183 PA).

Last year he certainly had no guarantee of a roster spot coming into spring training and ultimately lost out to Jose Martinez. Pham was called up shortly thereafter and now here we are today.

Someone tell me where the Cardinals ****ed with his service time?

After looking into the numbers I've concluded the writer is a hack who spun an article to get clicks and sell magazines. Shocker I know.

Almost all athletes are indentured servants to an extent, just because the freed ones become complicit in it doesn't make it not so

After they get done sweeping the Dodgers shortly, the Diamondbacks hop on a plane to St Louis for a weekend series with the Cardinals. They play tomorrow night, then have Friday off, before playing again Saturday and Sunday.

Any clue as to why they wouldn't have Thursday off, then start the series Friday?

First two Fridays of the season are odf days for some teams. I only investigated the full season of the Mariners and White Sox who both are off both Fridays, and neither has an off Friday the rest of the season. Hopefully that's the case for everybody

I thought it was odd enough they were off this past Sunday. Now a Friday too? Looks to be the only Friday and Sunday they have off this year though.
