Think his 2019 option at 22MM would've vested with a bit over 300 more ABs (or PAs? Not sure). Can't let that happen obv. Hanley at this point is an about average hitter and an awful 1B/DH. It's a shame because when he's on, he's one of the most entertaining players, but he hasn't been on for more than two weeks at a time since 2016.

He's not known as a lovable clubhouse guy either. It's a lot of money, but Seattle is probably a good fit for him.

The vesting option was 497 PAs.

I'm gonna miss him nontheless. Super fun hitter when on and was huge in the late stages of the 2016 division race. Plus, I first got into baseball after the 2014 World Cup and was naively super excited when the Sox signed him and Sandoval lol. Panda sucked right away, but Hanley hit 10 dingers in April 2015. Same reason I still root for Buchholz who was an elite pitcher in my first half of following the Red Sox until he (obv) got injured.

The Swihart not going down part is what surprised me...the money part + plus performance at the position didnt though. When guys like C.J. Cron and Matt Olsen are making pennies on the dollar compared to Han Ram and are outperforming him by a lot in ISO, wOBA, etc. the decision was pretty clear. I wouldnt worry about him being out of job for too long.

I take back whatever I've said about White Sox announcers being the worst. It's clearly the Giants announcers.

First they were puzzled and dismayed when Maddon decided to micromanage his pitchers in the 9th inning. I guess being Giants fans they are used to their manager playing to lose.

Then they were excited when he brought in Morrow because he was "due" to allow a homer. Truly the dumbest.

Good move for Sea. It just makes Cano that much more of a dumbass, it probably would be nice to have for them to have his veteran bat in the lineup for the playoffs. Could be a nice little race for 2nd wild card between M's and Angels and hopefully A's.

Right. I'm not sure what Swihart's purpose is. He clearly isn't going to ever make an impact (sweet wRC of 47 in AAA last year), but it's almost like they knew that Hanley was never going to be worth 22m, and instead of letting him get hot and possibly cutting him at a bad time, they decided to do it now when it wouldn't piss people off. I think we'd all rather have Hanley than Swihart this year, but this eliminates any sort of hand tying later in the year when he got closer to his PAs.

That being said, DD said this was all Alex Cora's idea, and I'd be surprised if Cora cares too much about salary. He may just not like Hanley. *shrug*

Hanley's 22MM option for '19 would have triggered if he had totalled 1050 PA's between '17/'18, and he passed a physical at the end of the season. He needed like 497 this year to do so.
