mariners about to be on their 3rd string catcher on opening day lol

I've never gotten how a catcher lets their glove get hit on a swing...its not like they don't know where the swing plane is

The closer you are to the plate the easier it is to make balls look like strikes when framing pitches. Also hitters take some very odd swings at pitches they are not expecting so it's not entirely predictable.

Figure out the closest you can get to a hitter with there being a 0% chance of him lunging at pitch he completely misjudged, and set up there. Just don't think an extra couple strikes over the course of a season is worth the injury risk.

Spoken as a former emergency little league catcher.

Good pitch framers get several extra strikes per game. For there to be a 0% chance of getting hit you'd have to set up 5+ feet behind plate. I caught for like 10 years and had catcher's interference called on me less than 5 times.

With 30 teams playing 162 games there are bound to be a few fluke injuries. How many times does a catcher even get hit each season across all 30 teams? Gotta be less than 100 over many thousands of plate appearances and most them are the bat just barely knicking the glove.

Also some batters set up way the **** back in the box so the place you normally set becomes in the swing path when it really shouldn't be. The back line of the batters box is totally gone after the first inning or so due to hitters standing on it.

Jake Lamb: 4 plate appearances; 3x w/bases loaded.

I'm pretty disappointed nobody has used a bullpen cart tonight. Should be mandatory imo

Also, those who voted Dbacks are correct.

Happy for the two rainouts yesterday. Now weve got all day action! Really easy to watch baseball 10a-10p, or what have you.

I knew Jordan Zimmerman had a bad year last year, but just saw his actual stats. 6.08 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 2.34 K/BB, in 29 starts. Yikes.

I wonder if Miguel Cabrera intends to bounce back. .329 OBP is shocking for him.

Very annoying change to the mlb.tv this year. Even if you have the volume on the game muted, some (all?) of the ads play out loud. It's very annoying. Have to use chrome's mute site feature.
