AT LEAST 3 pretty good teams eh? so you're counting the reds as a pretty good team which is already funny, then ... who's the other potentially pretty good team? cubs? pirates? astros?

no, theyve done fine, but showing that they could win games outside their division would have been important i'd think since they can't play the Twins or White Sox in the playoffs

its not funny to count the reds, they were definitely a top 10-12 team until they started to lose a ton of 1-run games and start running AAA guys, and of course the Cardinals are pretty good too

tbf I didn't know the Reds still had a losing record

yankees
red sox
rays
phillies
rangers
angels
tigers
dbacks
brewers
cardinals
braves
jays

there's 12 that are undoubtedly better than the reds, and that's without including teams like the giants/indians/white sox/dodgers who are probably in the same mix

so the reds are exactly mediocre

i guess the point here is LOL NL

The AL Central and NL Central are essentially even. (3rd order expectations of .4684 to .4696)

question for all:

if you could take the general manager position of any sub-.500 team effective immediately, and get a guaranteed five-year contract, which would you pick?

(http://espn.go.com/mlb/standings) for easy reference

your goal is to win obviously

Tigers have winning records against the Yankees and Rangers. 24-6 is pretty sick against any mlb competition imo.

if the goal is to win the division then i'd take the reds.

Dodgers. Still a big market team. Will have a decent owner. Play in a crappy division. Only have 46m in payroll next year but currently have 110m payroll.

it's pretty overstated how crappy the nl west is

the d-backs are good, the rockies have a strong offense, and the giants have great pitching. it's not like winning that division is easy, especially when "will have a decent owner" is anything but a given

the answer is clearly the nationals. you have strasburg + zimmerman, you have harper waiting in the wings and other zimmerman already in the bigs with espinosa who should be a fairly solid 2b in time

it will take far less to make the nationals a competitive playoff team than it would the dodgers, even if they are only chasing the wild card

No, it's not overstated. There's no quality in the division at all. There's a bunch of .500 teams.

yeah I like the Nats a lot, but at the same time I also like the Marlins, Mets, Braves, Phillies in the next 5 years as well. NL East is going to be pretty stacked.

mets have to drop their payroll to 30 million so i doubt they'll be competitive

to 30 million? is this real? how will that even be possible?

Prob meant by 30million, they have like 55m committed between Wright/Bay/Santana, payroll next year will be like 100m

I'd go Nationals then Pirates then Mets. Nationals have huge amount of talent, Espinosa should be moved to SS, then Rendon can take 2B, getting a good 1B is easy, Werth/Harper/Morse(or FA) OF and rotation of Strasburg/Zimmerman/Peacock with AJ Cole, Alex Meyer, Matt Purke close...

I might choose Nats, Indians...

You're taking the job now so what's the grace period on new GMs?

I'll say 5ish years?

I like the Nat's potential young talent but the Phillies are still built to win in 2012 and 2013. The Braves have lots of young talent that's ML ready now or right on the cusp of it. The Nats also have a terrible contract that's jamming them up to the tune of $21M a year. That's huge for a team that doesn't draw.

That being said, I have no clue who to pick without more research (That I don't feel like doing with football starting in 30 mins).

While admitting zero research.....I'll say Reds, White Sox, Dodgers, Rockies (in no particular order)

White sox is not a good fit. The competition is right, but they just signed a ton of bad contracts. Also, despite being in Chicago, they aren't really a big market team because they aren't very popular.
