The only other contract of it's kind was the Jon Singleton one, and it was about as big a disaster as $10MM spread out over 5 years can be. This deal certainly sets a new precedent for players with 0 service time. Locking in $24MM before age 30 seems ok to me, especially since you typically have to wait 3+ years to start making any money. He gets a $1.5MM signing bonus, plus higher than normal salaries for his first three years.
Singleton was a bust, but it was still only $10mil which was less than what qualifying offers were at the time. Altuve was certainly not a bust, and got locked up for cheap in 2013 but it was a different sort of deal.
Yeah the longoria one is the original, and might have scared off players from doing it a few years down the road. There's definitely incentive for players to do it, especially if they didn't hit a big signing bonus out of the draft. If the team is willing to delay the service clock far enough to get an extra year of control and avoid super 2, you're pretty much capped at like 2MM over the first 4 years, with some time in the minors. Kingery is beating that pretty handily.
The CBA negotiations, leading to 2021, will be interesante.

Rednecks are going to ***** about millionaires whining about getting paid to play a game, during the work stoppage.
It's over under time. Before I take action with a book decided to offer up action on here like I do every year. Have paid out on soccer, NBA, and MLB bets 3 years running now and prefer low stakes. Looking for $25/team with maybe going up to $50 on certain ones:

I don't know why there are no photos or videos on the webs, but when I was a kid, the Brewers' bullpen car was a Harley with a sidecar for the pitcher to sit in.
