A weird coincidence for me, today would've been my dad'a 77th birthday. He passed away in May. He raised me as a baseball fan, I cheered for the Jays because of him. And we both loved watching Doc.

Was listening to MLB radio and had to turn it off, gut wrenching. Did not know he led MLB in complete games 6 times.

One day in 2010 I got off work early and went to the bar to watch playoff baseball. That day I got to watch the only no hitter I've ever seen from beginning to end, and also ended up getting randomly hammered and having a great night that I still remember to this day. Thanks Doc.

The way he took it on the chin in 2000 I thought he was gonna be a major bust, obviously great arm but seemingly no clue. Opps...

My Mom was a huge Jays fan, watched or recorded [ on a vcr, if you can believe it ] every single game, for years and years. I don't think she ever really grasped, or cared for that matter, the subtlety of the game, but her passion was amazing.

Yep, Sullivan ****ing nailed it.

My childhood hero died this afternoon.

I found out at work. Had 2 filipino clients in my office and my phone started going bananas. Was going to check it when I had a second, but wasn't going to do so until after these people were gone, or at least at some point that I wasn't in front of them. Few minutes later, I left the office to see the manager to confirm something real quick, two of my co-workers pulled me aside in the manager's office and let us know the rumor.

Without looking at my phone, I turned it off. I sat back in the chair, took two big breaths, and held it together. I closed my sale, somehow, despite not really remembering any of it and fighting back tears the whole time. They pointed out the Edwin Encarnacion bobblehead on my desk.

Locked the door, drove home, and turned my phone back on. Texts from my best friend, and a couple others, confirming. I still don't understand how I haven't completely broken down and cried hard because that's the only thing that makes any sense right now.

This hit me so much harder than I would have thought

Damn. Roy was one of the best dudes according to everything you can read about him. Lots of charitable work with underprivileged children and a multiple time Roberto Clemente award nominee.

Somebody made a post on facebook about a 40 year old guy called "Doc" being dead and I instantly knew who it was but hoped it wasn't.

Yu definitely cost himself a lot of money. He literally just had the worst WS of all time for a starting pitcher.

I'm a die hard Yankees fan and I absolutely loved watching Halladay pitch.hes the only non Yankees jersey I've ever bought, probably watched 25 starts anhear of his on the baseball package for most of his career.an absolute surgoen on the mound with an off the charts work ethic.any young pitcher who was lucky enough to be his teammate should have been at the park from day 1 of spring training at 4 am and worked the way he worked.

I always thought Halladay was a guy that would still be pitching at 40.

Looking at Raw #s, he is listed as 42nd on JAWS for starting pitchers, which is the best purely statistical HOF measure around IMO.

Outside of lol Roger Clemens at 3rd, other currently on the ballot players ahead of him are:
27) Curt Schilling
28) Mike Mussina

Obviously Curt Schilling has shot himself in the foot recently, but he hasn't got in in 5 attempts and Mussina is trending in the right direction after 4 times on the ballot, but will still likely not make it until his 7th or 8th ballot at best.


Then again, Nolan Ryan is 31st, so writers do what they want.

Apples and oranges. Roy's death comes less than a year before his first ballot. He was also a far better player than Munson. Try comping him to Kirby Puckett (who Roy was still better than).
