Looking at some of the teams in that bracket that I don't know anything aboot. The 1985 Jays won 99 games with a very mediocre looking team in both hitting and pitching, even by lame 80's baseball standards.

The 95 Indians got bad lucked and placed into a game with the 2019 Astros in the second round. Not as bad of luck as having the umps cheat for the Braves in the real 95 world series. Otherwise it would have been 2019 Astros v. 1995 Indians.

Decided to look this up for lolz.

1985 Blue Jays:
99-62 record
99-62 Pythagorean W-L (759 runs, 588 runs allowed)
103 OPS+, 128 ERA+

That's a historically great pitching staff and deserved record.

How did this guy who put up a negative WAR in his age 26, 27, 28, and 29 season have an 18 year career and play until he was 40?

I only recognize the name because I remember as a kid having some cards of his and my Dad said he knew him when he was younger.

I'm guessing his manager was Monte Burns who liked to play percentages, which is why an AL player has pinch hitter listed as one of his positions. 70s and 80s baseball was hot garbage.

You're right. The Jays had a well balanced team perfect to rack up wins over the long haul of the season, but not be able to hang in playoff series.

When looking at some of the names from other rotations, the Jays don't jump off as historically great. Two other teams with names like Valenzuela, Hersheiser, Bob Welch. Saberhagen, Quisenberry, Leibrandt seemed like they would be better to me.

Im astonished that Bret Saberhagen pitched into 2001. Somehow don't remember him pitching (decently) for Boston in 98-99.

So why was Saberhagen with his 2 Cy Youngs and 59 WAR off the HOF ballot in one year with 1.7% while Roy Halladay with his 2 Cy Youngs and 64 WAR a first ballot?

halladay's peak is better
he's got 5 years of 7 war, sabergahen has 3
he has 3 other years of 5 war saberhagen has 2

they both won 2 cy youngs
saberhagen has 1 other third
halladay as two 2s a third and 2 fifths

Still it's a joke Saberhagen was off the ballot in one year.Same goes for David Cone Dave Steib and Kevin Brown.
All gone in 1 year.

Meanwhile that hack Jack Morris gets in because of some idiotic reputation as this "winning " pitcher.

Dave Stieb was the best pitcher of the 80s

Stieb appeared in four games for the 93 White Sox. Didn't play affiliated baseball for four years, and was back with the Jays in 98.

Sad that he wasn't a part of their two championships.

Charlie Hough with more WAR in the 80s than Morris!

Dude pitched in 1970, and for the Florida Marlins.

He was a replacement level reliever from age 22-33, then became a full time starter for the next 13 years.

He didn't bat for 13 years then went 2 for 63 at 45 years old - surprisingly only 20 strikeouts.

I did, but I wonder, was he always a knuckleballer or was that the reason for his 2nd half career surge?
