I'd hold Abreu for now since they'll get just about nothing for him given the 1B market. Be open to trading him in April-May and do so when someone else loses a 1B to injury.
Yeah makes sense. On the other hand, I certainly think there's value in getting all of those prospects in to the system now rather than being halfway decent for a while. Tank now, leggo.
I think you have to trade abreu now if you're going to do it specifically because of the 1b market. teams are pretty scared of paying up for an aging encarnacion or an overrated trumbo and that's the 1b class right now. abreu is by far a better option than either
re: What are the nationals doing, could this be a response to the revelation of the pending Harper departure? Playing for the next two years?
Yup. And Turner coming up with Rendon/Strasburg being in their primes. Scherzer having a couple more years of dominance left. Gonzalez getting older. Braves and Phillies rebuilding. It's a good time to go all in.
Not usually a big fan of any big money FA deals but I really like this one. Chapman is GOATish and isnt too old and throws so hard that he could lose a ton of velocity and still be a flame thrower.
Hard to see him not being good for most/all of this deal.

I would be very careful assuming Chapman will be similarly effective after he loses a few mph
Is there some data on that? Like his OPS against when his velocity is in that range. Eyetest seems to suggest otherwise, but the sample is very small.
can't find data for specific velocities but in 2012 and 2013 his average fastball velocity was 97 and 98 respectively and he was dominant. id be more worried if that slider started to give
Obv can't read the article but lol @ thinking Mariano deserves this when someone like Randy Johnson has double the WAR and pitched over 3 times as many innings.
Is there any argument that Rivera isn't a HOFer? Throw in that he seems to be well liked by just about everyone and did all this at like 200 pounds soaking wet in the steroid era and it makes sense. Don't feel like reading the article, but I'd be shocked if Olney's point was Rivera first unanimous HOFer=Rivera GOAT baseball player.
