Right now is the first time it ever occurred to me that anyone anywhere would ever consider Harold Baines worthy of being a Hall of Famer.

I guess you could argue if he hadn't missed time during the two strikes in 81 and 94, he would've had 400 hr and 3000 hits? That's about the only argument I got though.

I always liked Harold for obv reasons, I knew he was close to 3,000 hits, but Jesus H does he not belong in the HOF. Nice long solid career, but topped 3 WAR just twice. Topping out at 4.3. Didnt place in MVP balloting since 1985, career high 9th place.

Did drive in over 100 runs with a .919 OPS as a 40 years old in 1999, including 24 jacks with Baltimore in under 400 PAs.

lol @ how much of a struggle and how much effort a lot of people gave to get Tim Raines barely into the hall of fame.

Less than a year later and Harold Baines gets in with absolutely no effort.

Yes, that is 38.7 career bWAR Harold Baines. And unless I overlooked a season split among two teams, only had two years above 3.0 WAR.

Mike Trout easily exceeded Baines in total WAR in his age 24 season.

21 active position players have more career WAR.

Here are some players who have more:
Rafael Furcal
Jesse Barfield
Reggie Sanders
Moises Alou
Gary Gaetti

LOL, now it's starting to make sense. The same Reinsdorf who retired his number with the White Sox back in 1989 after only 9 seasons with the team (after trading him away) and then built a statue of him after he finally retired.

Number was unretired twice for being retired for a 3rd and final time.

I was a baseball fan for most of Baines’ career and he never struck me as particularly great.

Three seasons with 100+ RBI and 0 with 30+ homers. For someone that spent a good chunk of his career as a DH, that’s not good. I will say I’m impressed with a 121 OPS+ over a 22 season career though.

Someone mentioned to me that if he played another year and managed to get to 400 homers and 3000 hits he would have been a shoo-in. That’s comical. I mean, he’s probably right, but it’s still comical.

Nick Markakis has no chance at the Hall, right?

What a complete joke and a disgrace that 16 drunken idiots can put anyone they want in the HOF

Might as well put in my everyone halfway decent who has played for 10+ years at this point

I think a few years ago they put in some umpire from the 30s

Because they clearly know how good of an umpire that guy was

The 3,000 hit thing is weird. He probably would have been in almost a decade ago, despite objectively not really doing much more. Im curious how many guys are in now that wouldn't be if they finished with 2950 hits instead, even padding random other stats in exchange.

Baines topped out at 6.1% of the vote!

Lou Piniella missed by one vote! If there was a metric to combine playing career with managerial career, I've long thought he was worthy. He had quite the playing career to go along with 16th all time in wins.

The committee not taking into account that Baines did not even come close in the regular process is a bit of joke. Putting Baines in is not correcting some oversight from 1918, ffs.... It is simply overriding the electoral process that had him at 6%.....6%??

I don't think even Harold Baines thinks Harold Baines is a HoFer.

This is a new low for that joke organization, inducting a DH with under 40 WAR when legitimately great players like Larry Walker can't get any support.

Maybe, Mattingly has a shot now.

Harold Baines - Probably the most boring player I have ever watched. I used to throw away his baseball cards when I was a kid. He is your typical average player. That's it. Average.

But seriously, if Baines is in, Mattingly 1000% deserves to be in.
