Why are you lumping Votto in with those others? This is how contracts work, but even with that aside, Votto led the league in OBP and had more walks than strikeouts. I'd argue that he's the third best 1b in baseball even at 35.

I would say the bigger lol is M's. At least the Mets make the playoffs occasionally. It's not like the M's are content with being bottom dwellers. They spent a **** ton on Felix and Cano and still fail.

Trade is still LOL Mets but not incredibly over the top LOL....but has the potential.

They basically want 2019 to be their year. They still need more Bullpen help but FA class should get them something if the Wilpons still have the checkbook open.

The problem is 2020 and beyond.

They gave up 2 Top 100 prospects for Diaz which isnt exactly overpaying when you consider the market for Elite closers. However Diaz in 2020 is gonna get a huge pay increase for arbitration (all things equal) plus 2 more years past that of team control. We could be talking about the Mets flipping him in 2021 to get some of those top prospects back if it goes really south.

Then Cano...37 - 40 yrs old with 80 mil left to go. PED **** last year. Cespedes hitting behind him could lead the leauge 1-2 in IDGAF groundout trots to 1B. This has all the makings of a disaster.

Spoiler:

LOL METS

Segura now going, Philadelphia this time. JP Crawford and Carlos Santana coming back. Trader Jerry is a god damn cowboy.

wait, the M's downgraded at shortstop and sent over two relievers for two years of Carlos Santana?

Get a prospect or two at least out of it ffs. Not every day you see a team trade the best player in the deal and also get the worst contract.

Do the Mets just release Todd Frazier now? Who would trade for him? The Mets can't trade him to themselves.

Forgot one
This was part of a deal made when the Mets released Bonilla before the 2000 season while still owing him $5.9 million for the final year of his contract. The deal expires in 2035, at which point Bonilla will have been paid $29.8 million for a season in which he did not even play for the Mets.

I love it. Not gonna miss that at all.

This Segura trade is kind of brutal. Seems like M’s should have been able to get a couple of mid-level prospects, even without the two relievers thrown in. We are basically giving up four peak years of a reasonably priced top 10 SS for... a 23 year that really hasn’t wow’d at any level of professional ball. Plus by taking on Santana we aren’t really getting any salary relief until the 2021 season. I guess if they can flip Santana before the season starts maybe it won’t look so bad but it’s hard to imagine anything too awesome in return. I do think Santana might be a little underrated after a down 2018.

I read that Philly was the only market for Segura which sort of explains the weak-ish return but it doesn’t really explain why they had to pull the trigger on it.

I had fun making all the moves in MLB THE SHOW and playing a spring training game with the 2022 Mariners. Lol.

I won 5-3, but this was pre-Segura trade and he went 3-4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI. MLB Off-season Thread 2018-19

Deal seems fine. Even if you think he's more 2017 than his is 2018, that makes him a ~3WAR pitcher, which suggests that the Nats will need like 14WAR to break even. Actually does depend on the deferrals, but coming from a 4.8rWAR/6.3fWAR platform year at 29, that seems doable. Steamer has him projected for 3.5 in 2019.

The annual number is actually way low for the best SP on the market, but dude isn't going to be good for 6 years so the deal is very fair.

I guess I don't understand what the Nationals are trying to do? With the Braves and Phillies being the clear teams in the East moving forward, seems like the right time to rebuild. Especially if you think you're losing Harper.

Nats are pretty good on paper still. Think Rendon/Eaton/Soto/Scherzer/Stras/Corbin is a pretty nice start.

Harper is the Nats ______-best player.

3rd? 4th?

Scherzer and Strasburg means they can win the NL pennant... if they can make the playoffs.

I know lol Mets and lol Nats, but they are both probably favored over the Brave and Phil. I'll make some wagers on it after trade season.

Best is ambiguous, but even after a down year he's still #2 behind Max.

Nationals seems like they are exactly where the Tigers were the off season they signing Zimmermann and Upton. A team old and clearly in desperate need of a rebuild, trying to throw money at the problem as a last ditch effort to remain relevant.

Rebuild should be taking place now for the Nationals. Could be a quick one too with all the pieces they have to trade.
