Obviously if you took a time machine and transported Ruth to this time he’d suck. And if you gave him all the training and dietary regiments and whatever he’d be as good as trout. Regardless this should not be a featured story on ESPN.

Do you believe every position player who started 80+ games last year is a big favorite to be MVP in 1920?

McCutchen to the Phillies at 3/50. Seems odd.

Harper to NYY makes no sense unless they plan to play him at 1B, which also seems dumb.

Cutch deal seems fine as long as it’s not prohibitive to a major singing in any way. He probably won’t be worth it in year 3 but he’ll be a 3-4 WAR player the first 2 years

3/50 these days gets you a ~league average player*, maybe a bit more. Deal seems fine. Think Philly wanted one of Machado/Harper and then Corbin. Surprised they didn't pivot to Happ once Corbin found a home (and they still may, I guess... looks like the Happ to NYY isn't done, at least yet). Think Cutch and Machado, along with Hoskins to 1B and the Segura trade would amount to a really, really good offseason.

*Using $8MM/WAR, 2.5/2.0/1.5= 6 WAR*8MM=$48MM before inflation. If it's $7MM you still only need Cutch to be like 2.75/2.25/1.75 to break even.

Rays sign Charlie Morton 2 years 30MM plus a mystery Lackey-style option based on health.

Charlie Morton 2/30mil to the Rays. I'm rooting for him to help them big. Remember that the Rays won 90 ****ing games last year in a division that had two 100 game winners. They have already stated they are going to stick with "openers", I'm not sure if they'll have one for Morton, but he did dominate coming out of the pen in Astros WS.

edit:slow hadn't refreshed page.

The Rays season is crazy. I remember on Opening Day the Red Sox blew a 5-0 8th inning lead at the Trop, then won 8-9 straight and the Rays lost 8-9 straight.

Holy **** I just saw something flash on MLB net screen. Rays had just $10.2mil committed to the 2019 roster. 8mil of that for Kiermaier and 2.2mil still paying to Evan Longoria.

Morton a fantastic signing especially compared to Corbin. Arguably a better pitcher much less better contract

Rays just doing it

Very worth watching.

Larussa getting genuinely pissed. I hate mad dog, but he sticks to being right versus Tony.

What straws is La Russa grasping at? His argument that Baines is a HOF is because he is clearly better than Al Oliver even though Al Oliver has like 10% more WAR than Baines?

Sure, he can be better than Oliver, but guess what, Oliver isn't a HOF either, and he didn't even make a second ballot during his candidacy...

Quote:
At one point Russo brought up Al Oliver, who had similar career statistics to Baines (and a higher career WAR, 43.7 to 38.7).

"Al Oliver is not better than he is, no disrespect to Al Oliver," La Russa responded. "I used to watch you because I thought you knew the game. I'm going to start calling you clueless."
