Meant to include Turner in that, missed him for whatever reason.
Just looked up the deferred salary that the nats have and it's pretty wild.
Scherzer's $35MM salary in 19-21 ($105MM) is completely deferred until every July 1 from 22-28, at which point he'll be paid $15MM each year. The signing bonus for the contract acts as his salary for these three seasons, getting 7.5MM April 1 and Sept. 1.
Strasburg signed his contract two years ago, and is getting his $10MM signing bonus this year too, in July, $10MM. $30MM of his $35MM is getting deferred along with 10MM next year and 30MM in 2023. Those are to be paid as $10MM instalments July 1 2024-2030.
Based on durangos optimism for the Shelby Miller trade, I like the Dbacks side.
Luke Weaver could be a future ace.
Don't know anything about Carson Kelly but he has been a top 50/60 prospect last few years, so could be a longterm feature at Catcher.
Andrew Young appears to be a complete unknown.
This is for a player we aren't resigning who will be gone after next year.
And of course every casual fan on Twitter is saying the Dbacks got fleeced. lol
The other options are:
-Keep him this year and not resign him and get a similar competitive balance pick when he leaves.
-Keep him this year and vastly overpay for his decline years.
-Try to trade him closer to the deadline hoping somebody needs a 1B and can get a similar return.
Yeah the deal is fine it's just a funny way to announce your best player is leaving. I guess it did just happen so I assume the farewell etc. tweets are incoming, ignore me
I guess the Astros are holding out for Realmuto or a big SP. Although, they just signed Chirinos. Maybe they are just holding out for a trade deadline fire sale from the Mets, Nats, Cubs?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating keeping him longterm. It’s the same reason I sincerely hope madbum is dealt. But when the prize of the deal for a still hyperelite hitter with +defense is Luke Weaver you don’t get to celebrate
move probably means gyorko gets dealt I would assume. Jose Martinez probably out the door as well. Going to be a very interesting offseason in STL. Can't wait until they sign Harper!
Both sides did well in this trade. The Cardinals got a really good player without severely hurting their prospect depth or major league prospects. By doing so, they avoided overpaying for a player they will have for just one season. On the other hand, the Diamondbacks got two major league-ready starters, another decent prospect, and added another top-100 pick to their potential haul next season, where they will have eight picks in the top 100 so long as they don’t bring back A.J. Pollock. It has to hurt to see Paul Goldschmidt go, but this trade should accelerate the team’s window for contention even if they don’t go for it this year.
weaver's a bust, the other guys STL had to give up are w/e
if goldy doesn't forget how to hit over the winter it seems like an OK trade for the cards.
i'm a little unclear how matt carpenter is going to fit into all of this
Carp was neutral to slightly above average defense at 3rd last year in over 600 innings. Hope they trade Gyorko and Jose Martinez for bullpen help and make a strong push for Harper or Brantley.
