That is a huge discount for Trout. Assuming he kept being a 10 WAR player the next two years, he easily could have gotten 10/500 as a FA.

Michael Fulmer likely to have Tommy John surgery.

No one was ever going to pay him $50M a season for the latter half of his 30s, not in this environment.

Angels got a great deal, but I don’t blame Trout for hedging with ridiculous money like that.

What is amazing to me is that the Angels, despite having two of the best contracts in baseball - Trout and Ohtani - and a decent payroll, as still long shots to make the playoffs the next few years. Their management has been completely inept.

Not continuing to bat a negative WAR player 3rd/4th in the line up based on what he did 10 years ago would be an improvement.

And yeah Trout deal is a huge win for the Angels.

Mike Trout in his career has averaged 8.1 WAR/600 PA.

Vast majority of players don't get to 8 WAR in their best year. Many legitimate HoFers don't have an 8 WAR year.

It’s a fair deal but let’s not get carried away with how amazing it is for the Angels. If he does NOT end up being worth it, it’s likely he doesn’t even come close. One big injury or one permanent regression happens often.

The Angels paying a ton of money for a great player and the contract lasts to his late 30's, yep I don't see how this could go wrong.

Trout likely isn't gonna play CF for most of that contract either, which lowers a fair bit of the WAR value at the back end. Basically I think it'll be close, I'd also expect baseball revenues to decrease over time since they're losing fans and those huge TV contracts well I don't see how they're worth it so...

Given that MLB just extended its TV deal with Fox an additional 7 years until 2028, with an increase in revenue per year from approximately $500 million to $700 million, I don't see any basis for your contention that TV revenue is going to go down any time soon.

Just so I understand you. You’re drawing a comparison between a contract given to 32 year old Albert pujols and 27 year old Mike Trout, correct?

Trout deal seems fine to me since he is the GOAT.

He's worth what 60-65m a year in his current form?

Unless there is true deflation in the sport (hasn't happened in any American sports besides NHL '04 lockout I believe) then I don't see how it is a bad deal.

When he is giving you a 2WAR per season, the avg big market/big revenue team payroll will prob be 300m.

Without that type of extension, how much would they have been expected to pay over the next four years?

Arenado got $17.8M last year in arbitration and before signing the Rockies were at $24M and he was at $30M for 2019.

I don't know how to do the internet. Im trying to share a 5 minute clip that is a 30 for 30 on the Angels in the Outfield, as if it were real.

I was in hysterics nearly the whole time.

Looking further, Trout has had one season with a lower WAR than Frank's career high, in 2017 when he missed a lot of time.

Trout has had two seasons of 9+ WAR and two more seasons of 10+ WAR in which he didn't win the MVP.
