Couple notes from his b-ref, at 39 lead the AL in walks and steals, and at 40 with the Mets had a ~.890 OPS in over 500 PAs. Last made an All Star team at 31.

Another: Even though he played until he was 44, he only had a negative WAR for a season in his age 20 rookie season. For reference Pujols supposedly is 38 and has already had one.

He also should have had more than 1 MVP.

In 1980 he should have been runner up to George Brett's amazing .390 season (finished 10th).

In 1985 had league's highest WAR and finished 3rd.

And his 1990 is still one of the most epic seasons ever. For a speedster who led the league in stealing, he also led the league in OPS and OPS+.

For comparison to Juan Pierre in the middle of the PED years (his best OPS+)
2004 Juan Pierre: 45 SB, .326/.374/.407 107 OPS+
1990 Rickey Henderson: 65 SB, .325/.439/.577 189 OPS+

He refused to call it a career too. Played independent ball when he was like 48 or something.

edit- Age 46 suited up with the San Diego Surfdogs. 30 for 30 podcast about it. https://30for30podcasts.com/episodes/rickey-wont-quit/

Rickey should have been the 1985 AL MVP easily, but that was an era when RBIs still won you MVPs.

Mattingly had 145 RBI that year, and for very good reason, Rickey hit in front of him!

Rickey is somewhat underrated because of how long he played past his prime. In his prime (the 1980's) he was the best player in baseball.

"This is Rickey calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey wants to play baseball."

Not sure if true of not (supposed call he made to Kevin Towers), but I am going to believe it was because it sounds just so......Rickey...

Refused a QO for 17 mil before last season only to get back to back 1 year deals for a combined 17 mil

More like BorASS

Eric Hosmer may end up being the only offseason winner in 2 years, by locking up 8 years with the Padres.

Can't really blame Boras for telling Moose to reject a deal that is obviously worse than what he is going to get according to the market the previous few years only to have the owners start colluding to bring contract prices down instead of bidding against each other to try and field the best team. That's not really something you can predict. Sucks for Moose.

Damn, Machado to Padres. Good for them, though in a way it makes the Hosmer signing even dumber.

I wish there were odds posted on Bro getting less, or the exact same contract.

I'm actually rooting for the Pads in the the west. Don't they have the best farm in baseball too?

Lol at all the whining about collusion. Machado only got the biggest free agent contract in American sports history, until Harper probably tops it next week.

Pretty immediately the worst player contract in the history of pro sports

Lol Padres

Bout time.

Im not going to laugh at a team getting a 26 year old player thats had 7.1, 6.9, and 5.7 WAR in 3 of the last 4 years. Even if this year isn't their year, they have 5 top 50 prospects and they will be able to contend while still in Machados prime. Dudes only 26 and should have his actual prime ahead of him.

Giancarlo is considerably worse. Manny will at least be able to play an infield position for his career. Jimcarrey will be cut before his contract ends.

Ryan Howard still the worst by far. Set the franchise back at least half a decade. Think over 5 years he netted them -4.4 WAR or something like that.

Lol, there are easily 15-20 worse contracts in baseball.

Also it’s an overlay but he’s so good and so young, wish my team had him for that deal.
