when there are multiple pitches on the black or in the strikezone on all four sides called balls then i think it is fair to say the ump is squeezing the pitcher:

that is 9 pitches in or on the black called balls. if you can find more than one pitch that timmy threw outside the strikezone which was called a strike i will be impressed.

I'm not saying he didn't get "squeezed" by your definition, just that it is pretty standard and you could probably complain about it most games

I mean here is Liriano's start from tonight, didn't even get one called strike outside the zone

i disagree. i don't think i could complain about 1 starting pitcher throwing 9 pitches on the black or in the strikezone that were called balls and all of 1 pitch on the black and 0 outside the strike zone that were called strikes in most games. i understand that umpires are not perfect, but generally they are not perfect in a manner that is slightly more fair to the pitcher.

looks to me like timmy pitched a fantastic game while getting squeezed against a pretty good offense in the most extreme hitters park in mlb. i am a little biased tho.

edit: yes it does appear that the ump was taking away one side of the plate from liriano. i didn't watch the game though so i am less sure about it but it does not look good. even more evidence that mlb needs robot umps imo.

that S next to the red dot in the key means *called* strike, right? or do the plots that only have B/S/X mix all strikes together?

if they don't, i must be missing some kind of level. timmay got a called strike outside the zone in the first one phildo posted, and then thegameau said that liriano did not get a single called strike outside the zone... when he had at least 5.

no, in the b/s/x chart the red is all strikes. every strike timmy threw tonight outside the strike zone was swinging. you can check it against the last chart i posted, which shows swinging strikes and called strikes separately but is kind of a pain in the ass to read.

i would assume at least most of the ones outside the zone from liriano's chart are swinging strikes too but i'm not gonna look it up.
