Definitely - if it wasn't risky for teams, it wouldn't make any sense for players to do this. I almost like it better when things don't work on for the team on small deals because I feel players that are able to get to this point deserve real compensation, even if they don't end up having a long productive major league career.
Baseball is pretty bad (worse than other sports, even though all sports are a bit unfair in this sense) in terms of how player compensation is allocated between veterans and newcomers, due to the amount of time players spent in the minors and a very long team control period - you could have an excellent career in the minors for 4 years, have a couple of great seasons in the majors and end up with career earnings less than 2M.
