Just based on those numbers, it's not surprising that baseball has way more variance.
I think an inning makes a better comparison to a basketball possession than 38 ABs.
You have 9 offense scoring opportunities and 9 score prevention opportunities . ABs would be better if the only outcome was a HR or an out. In basketball you score or don't on each possession. In baseball you can progress towards scoring in each AB, which is not possible in Basketball (except for a foul, I guess).
