Definitely fooled but didn't but continued to keep it going for several reasons. Most notable one of course is publicity. Another one would be to cover up the fact that he got duped so easily. Finally, he didn't want it to serve as a distraction for the team during the season. So hide it for now, then open up the can of worms once the season is over.
