also i find this "learned about it from a phone call on Dec. 6th" story to be BS, given that there were tweets about it on Dec. 3rd-5th: (read from the bottom up, the ones from before the December 12th joking convo are from the 3rd-5th iirc, and Te'o is included in the first one on the 3rd)

The whole 'exaggerating the relationship' thing just makes everything else make more sense.

Why didn't he figure out she was fake? Because they weren't as close as he described.
Why didn't they meet? Because they weren't really talking as much as he said
Why didn't he step in front of the media craziness when he could have? Because the relationship wasn't that BIGGEST DEAL EVER like he said it was and he probably never thought it would get this far.

In one of the threads (most likely the NFL draft prospects thread) mjw does a pretty good breakdown of Te'o, before the NC game and well before any of this came to light. He concluded that despite his stats, Te'o was overrated as a prospect, because (iirc) he was slow to react, had poor instincts, and often guessed where the ball was going instead of reading the play.

The fact that he got the crap kicked out of him by the team with the talent level most closely approximating what he'll see in the NFL is just icing on the cake. As is the whole "serious mental problems" thing.
