Why do we believe the girl wasn't in on it? She is HS friends with his friend and lives in Cali; just because she said she didn't know about it? So nobody that knows her ever saw Manti's "girlfriend's" picture?

The tone of the deadspin article indicated that they believe she's telling the truth.
Plus the fact that she actually talked to them while everyone else believed to be involved didn't return their calls.
last thing i'll post cause it's kinda of a derail but:
the player wasn't charged because the girl was ****ing dead.
notre dame has a reputed culture of sweeping damning allegations under the rug to protect its image and football program. i know i'm not the only one who believes that.
"no probable cause" is a borderline sociopathic response as it fails to acknowledge the possibility of a larger issue here, iyam.
He had this insane sob story before [he sang]," an insider reveals to Us. "It would make for great TV."
According to the source, Tuiasosopo told producers he and his cousins started a Christian band together and were on their way to perform at a youth conference in Nevada when they got into a "massive" car accident. He claimed a truck crashed into their vehicle, sending them flip-flopping all over the freeway. He also said doctors thought one of them might have been brain-dead, but miraculously, everyone was fine.
Gay theories aside, he could just be an attention whore.
Here's a good article about these types of people. It's a long read, but it's an interesting look into the mindset of people who will basically do anything for attention, no matter how much they look like a sociopath:
Alright with new developments this is where I'm at:
1. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo is behind the hoax, with malicious intent.
2. Manti Te'o is a combination of moran, attention whore, and super naive mormon (that is quite possibly gay) and he seriously exaggerated what was happening.
3. It was probably pretty well known towards the end of Lenney's "life" that she was likely not real, by many people intimate in Te'o's life (I am thinking players on his team).
4. The crux of what happened was a lie from Ronaiah Tuiasosopo pretending to be a girl interested in Manti Te'o was blown out of proportion by Manti Te'o, which was then blown out of proportion again by the MSM. In the end you have a series of not very believable lies that result in a grand story about the world's most Christian and perfect person.
After Deadspin.com broke the hoax story, however, multiple media reports have said players thought that Te'o had only met Lennay Kekua once and that it wasn't really accurate to call her his girlfriend. But as condolences poured in, Te'o "played along," according to the teammate, who wished to remain anonymous.
in manti's head: I think I'll fake kill my fake girlfriend to get them to stop making fun of me. but i can't do it right away or else they'll make fun of me for that too.
Jerry: "So you just left your girlfriend in Hawaii?"
George: "Don't you get it Jerry? I MADE HER UP!"
Jerry: "You made her up?"
George: "I MADE HER UP!"
Jerry: "But why?"
George: "I was nervous, everyone at the luau was talking about their wives and girlfriends, I had to say something. Its like middle school all over again."
grunching the next 1000 posts and im sure somebody already said it but being such a seinfeld nerd i cant help myself. George actually did do this in an episode...the man hands episode!
Minor league baseball team having a "Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead Night," complete with air guitar contest, imaginary food fight, and make pretend kiss cam.
I think it's pretty easy to explain how he lied so often and so convincingly about this for so long. Whenever he had to elaborate on his relationship with his "gf," in his mind, he just conjures up the thoughts/feelings/events that involved his gay lover. when he's saying she's "so inspirational" or she "plays music" or she was "in an accident," he's just thinking of tuiasosopo (or someone else, perhaps) i mean every time someone expects to encounter "Lennay Kekua" in real life, up pops this tuiasosopo guy in her place, explaining that for whatever reason, she couldn't make it, but here i am in her place.
I think by far the most plausible motive for all this is that they initially concocted this fake gf for te'o to have some kind of beard, which was not that big a deal the first few years of his career since notre dame hadn't done sh*t in decades, but once he started to acquire some real notoriety at the beginning of the season, they decided it wouldn't be very convenient to have a non-existant gf hanging around as it becomes obvious that he's going to receive much more public scrutiny the better he plays. and that's where the wheels really came off the cart, since they decided to kill her in order to make her go away. like a lot of people said, why didn't he just say his gf broke up with him? well....i just think he was so buried in lies at that point, that he wasn't exactly thinking clearly or rationally about how out of control sh*t might get once he decides to say she's dead. i think he probably figured it would go away quietly after a bit. once it doesn't, hell he's gotta eat the whole sandwich at that point and go all in with the dead gf angle and hope to god its not exposed as a fraud, right?
the idea that we're supposed to buy that this was some kind of months or years-long "catfishing" thing that he wasn't extensively involved with from the beginning? come on.
over/under on when he comes out or is pushed out? 1 week? 2? 4?
