No matter what the truth is, someone involved in this had to have a ****ed up motivation at some point. Whether it's Te'o being a sociopath and wanting attention, trolls wanting to ruin someone's life, or Tuiasosopo wanting to jerk off while ****ing over his best friend etc.

Sorry, but if it turns out that Te'o is gay, I won't have any sympathy. I think there are much easier and much less attention whore-y ways of having a beard than having one at another college who you've never met, who then dies. It's not a product of a culture that can't accept homosexuality, it's a narcissist who thinks someone dying close to them makes them more interesting (in addition to the gay coverup).

There are many angles that go into coming out. If you had to pick the worst situation to do it, his was it. Mormon, high-profile, sports. High-profile is fine, people have done that before. Sports are generally not accepting, religions are overwhelmingly not accepting. I feel our culture is as sympathetic towards gays as it's ever been. I'd feel bad for Te'o if he felt that this was his only course of action. Feeling bad in the sense that he should be smart enough to realize there are better solutions.
