Re: Manti Ruh R'oh

Is that really a Sports Illustrated transcript?

EDIT: I mean, wow. I'm not sure how I'd handle this if I had to rep / manage him moving forward.

Also some of that stuff is so completely ridiculous. "Say your goodbyes." "Lucky she had AT&T so it was all free or my family would kill me."

Because your family would never understand you talking to your beloved dying girlfriend? Lucky because you couldn't change plans for your beloved dying girlfriend?

Weird that Thamel never went further. Reading between the lines it seems as if he's doubting the story as Te'o's telling it.

Easy to say now, but if you challenge the guy and he is telling the truth, then you come off as a huge superdouche.

I think "give the college kid the benefit of the doubt about losing his grandmother and girlfriend on the same day" is a pretty reasonable approach, even if you've got concerns.

Subtle foreshadowing imo

TE'O: I don't know. She had a lot of different injuries.
SI: How long was she hospitalized?
TE'O: She was in that hospital for about two months.
SI: Wow, did she get out?
TE'O: She didn't get out. She went from there. Remember she got in the accident and she was in a coma. We lost her, actually, twice. She flatlined twice. They revived her twice. It was just a trippy situation. It was a day I was flying home from South Bend to go home for summer break. It was May. Mid-May. That was the day where they said, "Bro, we're going to pull it. We're going to pull the plug." I remember having this feeling like everything is going to be OK. They were telling me, "Say your goodbyes." From April 28 to around mid-May, I was always talking to my girlfriend who was on a machine.

Where does the Leukemia come into this story?

Edit: I see it now on the longer part of the story. But I still am confused about the timing. Was the Leukemia before or after the car crash?

This. Just look at the client list. It's the Who's Who of Who's Who in entertainment.

Also this is kind of werewolf thinking, but that troll post and setup is too clever by half, right? Years-long trolling becomes vehicle for a flippant (and admittedly hilarious) troll tweet that would seem to openly admit, all of a sudden, that Te'o was hardcore trolled? Isn't that too much, too clever, too soon? Isn't that convenient for Te'o?

EDIT: Unless that's not actually the same account, in which case nice work someone.
This is tough. Seems like it ups the extravagance too much for a top-notch agency. Remember that the agency is investing in Te'o's future; they haven't been paid yet.

An NFL Draft prospect coming out -- even saying lying that he's gay because nothing else can be likely to stick -- raises the risk for a client without a contract. Not saying that his stock will greatly plummet for saying he's gay, but why would CAA enter unknown territory, putting their client in a position to actually get further isolated when he enters the league?

Maybe I have less faith in the acceptance of the sports world for a gay athlete of such a popularity caliber than I should, but -- again -- there's no precedence to show this can work and you don't pull a first with a client that doesn't have a contract like this, I'd think.

CAA didn't sign him to be the a long-term advertising asset; they signed him to milk his status as the most popular Notre Dame alum in a very long time with anything after the next few years being gravy.

Re: Manti Ruh R'oh

nbcnews.com has a pretty great summary of all the questionable stuff

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013...iend-hoax?lite

Quote:
1. Notre Dame says that Te'o never met Kekua, that their relationship was strictly online and by phone. But the player's father gave the South Bend Tribune a detailed account of how the couple first met at a Stanford game in Palo Alto in 2009 and rendez-voused in Hawaii after becoming a couple in early 2012. And Te'o himself told ESPN that she was the "most beautiful girl I ever met."

2. Te'o called Kekua "the love of my life." His parents said they believed they would get married. Yet if Notre Dame's account is to be believed, they never met even once, or even Skyped. It beggars belief.

3. Before her leukemia "diagnosis," Kekua supposedly was nearly killed in a car accident. But published profiles of Te'o have conflicting dates -- late 2011, last January, or as recently as April. Why the discrepancies?

4. When did Kekua's fictitious death happen? Various interviews with Te'o have her succumbing to leukemia hours before his grandmother died on Sept. 12, soon after, or even days after. Assuming Te'o truly believed Kekua had passed away, wouldn't he remember the date? Or did all the reporters get the details wrong?

5. After he supposedly received the shock of his life -- a call from someone using Kekua's voice and phone number while he was at the ESPN Awards on Dec. 6 -- Teo stayed quiet for three weeks. It wasn't until Dec. 26 that he told Notre Dame officials, who then hired private investigators to look into it.

6. If Te'o was in on the deception, though, why wouldn't he just let Kekua rest in peace? Was he or someone else worried the hoax was about to come to light, prompting a fourth-quarter end-run to get ahead of the revelations?

7. Hours after Deadspin's bombshell report and Notre Dame's press conference, when it seemed that everyone could agree on one thing -- there is no Lennay Kekua -- an NFL player claimed to have actually seen her in the flesh. Arizona Cardinals fullback Regan Mauia said he met her in American Samoa in 2011, before she started romancing Te'o, and is "close" to her family.

8. Carrying out the hoax would have been a full-time job involving more than one person. Te'o claims he would spend all night on the phone with Kekua while she was in the hospital. There were purported communications from family members. Who would have had the time to orchestrate it? By the same token, how would Te'o have been able to create and maintain a social-media profile for Kekua on his own?

9. Where's the motive? A central figure in the hoax is reported to be musician Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. Deadspin reported that he had contact with the woman, a former high-school classmate, whose photos were used to create Kekua's profile -- even obtaining one of the pictures from her directly. But the site also describes Tuiasosopo as a friend of Te'o, raising the question of why he would humiliate his buddy.

Even if he doesn't want to deal with the media, NFL teams have good investigative staffs. He can't avoid this.

First openly gay athlete in the NFL is how I think this all ends up.

SI random comment:
"Lennay was incredible. Although she was hospitalized for 8 straight months, she was able to step into her father's role at the construction company in October when he died. From the hospital, working in a senior administrative position! Amazing! What strength and courage. And what kind of idiot listens to someone read him 12 pages of letters from his girlefreind each week. Please."

SI: Tell me about Lennay.
HILLIARD: She was a very supportive, loving passionate individual. She was all about God and prayer and being able to have faith. Me and her never met in person. But I felt like this was a testament to who she was. She would still text and tweet me before my games. Good luck brother. Good job out there today.
The fact that she would do that for someone she never met. The fact that [Manti] and I such great friends and brothers. Who she was and is as a person. Pleasure for me to know her. She made my best friend such a happy man, it's something that made me a happy man as well.
WAT. Another person claims to have met this girl.

yeah it seems pretty difficult, given that it seems almost impossible that he was legit duped. but i mean, if that is the case do you just get out there and prove that he's an idiot or something?

definitely seems like they're trying to cover the story up and hope people just move on. is CAA really gonna tell him to like never talk about this in public and hope people believe that he was some duped fool rather than something worse? he's never gonna answer questions, like say about Ronaiah Tuiasosopo? (who he apparently knows, and seems to be behind "Lennay")

Mormons can't be gay. He will get kicked out of the church. The church's stance is that being attracted to members of the same sex is a life challenge that needs to be overcome. If he's gay he'll never admit it.

Caller on Francessa just tried to claim that the reporters from Deadspin were the people behind everything (they were the fake girl, tweets, etc) in a effort to make a name for themselves.

We're through the looking glass here people.

I'm just guessing, of course. I can see the angle of CAA using their other talent to rally around Te'o and turn him into a pop culture icon.

edit: in response to the danny ocean post

ya, the last point is the most important one to me - none of the people who act like teo is the victim can come up with any reasonable motive for why someone or many people would continue this hoax. Were supposed to believe that he was getting pranked for fun? eventhough theres no explicit reward and it would be really time consuming? Its ridiculous and absurd.
