The Oct. 13 South Bend Tribune reports that Lennay Kekua had sent a text message to Manti's parents, Brian and Ottilia, "expressing her condolences over the passing of Ottilia's mom, Annette Santiago." But according to the South Bend Tribune's reporting on Sept. 21, 23, and 29, Lennay was already dead.

Although I guess there is a chance he is a total sociopath, but that seems like a stretch.

-Tuiasasopo meeting the random Twitter girl for Lennay's sister. Could still happen if Te'o was in on it, but just seems like a prankster type enjoying their notoriety more than what would happen if it was a conspiracy carefully planned by Te'o to hide homosexuality/build Heisman hype.

-Even the independent investigation launched by Notre Dame. While there are obvious parallels with the coverups within the Catholic Church, there's a huge difference here. The priests were not only ongoing members of the Church, but official representatives, and any untoward behavior by them could do serious damage. Furthermore, the Church had strong reasons to believe that they could actually successfully cover it up (they did so for years and years before being caught). In this case, if Te'o was actually in on a coverup, it's going to come out eventually when NFL teams do their own investigations prior to the draft so it's in their best interest to distance themselves as soon as possible. The fact that they didn't makes me think that they likely believe the story, and their investigation came to the conclusion that he really was a sap here.

No reason to believe the bolded is actually true. If you assume ND and Te'o were in on it (or Te'o was in on it and ND is trying to cover it up) then their actions after it broke make a ton of sense. They claimed they were going to reveal it all this Monday had Deadspin not broke the story. Seems pretty convenient.

The milking of the fake death after not seeing her while sick, or seeing her while healing from the car accident, or visiting her grave doesn't make this a huge stretch, IMO.

That said, Te'o did mention that account -- which Deadspin reported didn't exist in November. He either forgot that the "love of his life's" Twitter account was changed or knew of the hoax by then and was milking it so no one would try to make a legit communication with the account he was mentioning.
