1) Standard of evidence for convicting someone is much higher than that for believing they're full of ****. Once we've decided he's full of ****, he needs to convince us otherwise if he wants us to believe otherwise.
2) Big institutions, especially ones connected to CFB or the Catholic Church, have a terrible record for doing anything but stonewalling/covering up dishonesty.

I don't know if it was a legal crime, but the dude potentially concocted an imaginary girlfriend to kill her off so that he would be seen as sympathic and inspirational figure that everyone was rooting for, in turn leading to a great deal of fawning media coverage, which would help his NFL draft stock, not to mention help win him a bunch of various awards he was up for.

I think people just want the truth, especially if Te'o duped anyone.
edit: And also what those guys just said

Well as is, he's painted as really really really dumb/gullible or a compulsive liar.
He will have to admit the truth to NFL teams which will get out. Might as well get on with it.

Whichever end of this story ends up being true is pretty tinfoily. Either he concocted this whole story as an effort to hide the fact he's gay (I don't see him doing this for any other reason really) or he's so incredibly naive he's fallen for a 3+ year catfishing.
Real life is a strange place sometimes.

So the logical conclusion is that he will now show up and say, "see, I was justified in talking on national tv about my dead girlfriend. I haz proof!"

****, if he turned out to be gay, this whole fiasco would lower his draft stock less for me than his horrific national championship performance (and what I presume will be an unfriendly combine).

I'd argue that he cost himself basically a mid-first-round signing bonus, and that's about it. He was never going to be an NFL success

2012,
Discovery of the higgs boson at a cost of around 13.25 billion dollars.
The #2 vote recipient for the Heisman has his girlfriend of 3 years featured on national media after losing her battle with leukemia, and is found out to not be real, after several months.

Isn't 'hiding he's gay" a big favorite over "wanted attention" because of the very real death of his grandmother? He was purportedly very close to her so that's plenty of drama for TV crews to fawn over.

He'd have likely been a mid first rounder with a decent CG performance and no fake gf. Now he's, what, a 3rd rounder? That's a huge difference during a rookie contract.

Vontaze Burfict went undrafted because he was a huge weirdo and he was probably more talented than Teo.

Re: Manti Te'o: rut roh
I have no idea about the gay thing, he'll be way better off if that's the case vs. doing it for publicity. If it was some elaborate covering up gayness thing people will feel bad for him and various gay groups will go to bat for him, etc.
If he did it for publicity the dude is going to be seen as a scumbag forever.

This!
I've been bouncing around the web reading articles and listening to the reports on Sportscenter for the last hour or so and about 20 times I've asked my self "wtf? is this real life?" Then the weird twists. Is the dude from the Cardinals saying he smashed this chick? Lifetime movies can't even top this drama.

Mostly just playing devil's advocate here since everyone seems to think he was in on it itt.

People (the general public) don't like being played for fools.

I'd say he's almost certainly more talented than Te'o, although his brand of weirdness was "lazy and commits lots of personal foul penalties", not "invented fictional girlfriends".

For publicity will get him less heat in the NFL than being gay.

Re: Manti Te'o: rut roh
Heat of the moment wanting more sympathy after his grandmas death doesn't really make sense as his fake gf getting in car accidents/standing him up in Hawaii/cancer had been building for a long time. This was planned out, ldo.
Def think he thought it was a good time to sweep the lie under the rug vs some vindictive family friend of his believed it was the perfect day to call and say oh btw your gf died as well.

This is a pretty popular Christian song. In this song, "He" refers to God. So this isn't great evidence for a gay cover-up.

For all the proofers itt, how does it play out in your head? He calls a press conference, shows them letters he received from a fake person, then answers questions for 10 mins about how he could be such an idiot?
Also, gay in on it much more likely than straight in on it imo. No way he thought he would be in the heisman race when this went down.

Better method of sweeping things under the rug:
1. My girlfriend and I broke up.
2. My girlfriend died of cancer.
