On the radio they came up with something similar to this.

Except the fake girlfriend was only for his parents to know about, so they wouldn't question his sexuality. When they wanted to meet her, he made up the story about the leukemia so she didn't come to Hawaii.

When they all flew to the USA and were gonna meet her, he "killed" her off before they got a chance to figure it out.

His family was the ones that leaked all this to the media in the first place, and he just rolled with it, hoping it would blow over.

All of you saying "there's no chance he could be this stupid/socially unaware" really need to watch the MTV show.

This seems reasonable. When I was at Cal, there were a few Mormon Hawaiians on the football team and they drank and parties along with the other football players. I would guess the peer pressure was probably intense the whole time they were there.

The fake gf might have been an excuse to allow him to duck out of this kind of stuff.

But then again, the killing her off part makes no sense as well as telling the family about it.

So if he's not in on it likely means 'Sopo is gay and was in love with Te'o. He was okay spending the hours on the phone to keep the hoax alive because he genuinely loved the conversation and company.

He realized that once Te'o finished up at ND there was no way to keep it going. He'd have money and the means to travel anywhere in the world to see the love of his life. He has to end it somehow and wanted a clean break. No calls trying to rekindle from Te'o or anything like that. Had to just kill the "girl".

Seems plausible, but my gut is he was in on it.

I'd believe this and all, but wouldn't the family want to send flowers for the funeral and everything. Or even attend the funeral if GAYO couldn't. Or send a card to her mother and father.

Deadspin talks about the friend belonging to a family of athletes with cousins and such in the nfl and having a decent start to high school as a qb before fading away. He was also the son of a preacher. It wouldn't be too difficult to believe he did all of just because.

People are waaaaay over estimating how dumb you'd have to be to fall for this. It said the friend had already used the girl as a fake, and a cardinals player believes she existed as well under the alias. As long as there was a real female talking to him on the phone, the rest could easily play out.

Article also mentioned that he and his father thought she was doing well, so he didn't necessarily have to think she was days from death as people are implying.

My last beef with this is the question of why the fake chick couldn't just break things off with him. Is dying really necessary?

Uh, he tells the family about it because they might want to know why he's not dating and/or if he's gay, beyond being at a Catholic school, he's in a Mormon and Samoan family, where I understand it homosexuality is frowned upon.

And he kills her off because he was going to have to produce a real live woman soon when they came to visit.

I knew the Postal Service was having budget cutbacks, but a 31 day delay is ridiculous!

And this isn't brag-lying to some buddies. We're talking about ESPN and CBS features.

Now, this is a logically consistent story with the facts we know.

Then, he wouldn't repeatedly talk about meeting with someone so many times that repeatedly stood him up on national TV. He'd change the subject out of shame and not volunteer so many details of the emotions stirred in these face-to-face meetings.

May or may not be gay. May have just been a cover for remaining a virgin that went too far to avoid **** speculation, but Te'o didn't discover much on Dec. 26.

Yeah, I think he was in on it, but if not then your theory is a strong one. Being heavily involved in religious affairs is another good cover for not having a girlfriend in a society that frowns on homosexuality.

I don't get why that's suspicious, he says she wrote letters prior to games, as if she'd write them well before and send them so they got there on time. (Odd she'd stop with the Stanford game, but not overly so).

Edit: More specifically, he says it's "kind of creepy". Writing letters to a friend prior to their games isn't creepy, but writing them and delaying their being sent so they arrive later would definitely be considered creepy if that person died with letters yet to be delivered.
